Why does steam need an authenticator? i turned it off and it still freaks the fuck out whenever i sign in and sends me emails to verify my sign in each time. It's annoying to sign in eitherway.Do people enjoy this?Is this only a thing because new jobs were made to support this and rely on this being a thing so they don't get fired?
DM'ed you the fix
>>736224864Normalfags can't be trusted with passwords so everyone started using 2fa.>inb4 well that's their problem not mineYeah but a company doesn't get to say that, if someone gets hacked there's a very good chance they'll blame the company itself and tarnish their reputation.I like steam's authenticator because it lets you log in without a username or password (so I guess it's really more of a 1fa), but I wish they used a more standard OTP generator so you could easily use it with any authenticator app.
>>736224864I disabled the email authenticator and instead turned the steam guard code into a TOTP key so I could have more control over it. I fucking hate how steam doesn't allow you to do that in an easy way, and the worst part being subhuman retards defending this measure on reddit or steam forums. Just thinking about it it makes me mad fuck bootlickers holy shit die diedie fie die
>>736224864Because online safety is important, doofus. If you don't have 2FA everywhere, you're an idiot.
>>736224864Just don't log out
>>736224864It's required to use the steam market
>>736224864>why does my entire library of purchased games, billing information/address, and friends list need protection?
>>736224864>>736226120>and instead turned the steam guard code into a TOTP keySame, I used a rooted android phone to do it years ago. Nothing against steam guard or multi-factor authentication as a concept, but that's only if the user is in charge. I have a robust security setup involving passkeys, fully local password manager and a two-factor TOTP app. Steam forcing you to download and install a bloated mobile app, instead of allowing users to generate their own TOTP key and code to use with something like Aegis Authenticator or even keepassXC is just harrowing.
>>736226338Considering how deeply modern security practices shoves their fist up your anus to create a profile based on my hardware and network connection, they should implicitly know who I am just because my connection and computer has been the same as its been for the last 15 years. They should only need to ask for secondary authentication if my IP or hardware changed.
>>736227212everytime you windows update or bios update or driver update your computer is not the same. all the caches and certs become invalided.
>>736227404but it's the same machine
>>736229835why do you think everytime you change proton it counts as a new machine for denuvo
>>736229835same local machine but not same microsoft credientials
>>736229835It's "This PC" not "My PC" ever since Windows 10.
Time to become an epicchad instead
>>736224864Why are you even logging in often?I haven't logged out of steam in years
>>736224864You must be doing something wrong because I NEVER have to login on my main computer and the phone app/steam deck/other pc only ask me once in a while.
Unless you're cleaning out cookies every hour steam will literally never log you out by itself.
>>736224864because retards keep getting their accounts stolen
Because the alternative is steam being as unstable as psn where accounts get hacked and stolen all the time. Steam cannot afford to lax with normalfags information so they retardproof everything. If somehow you still get your account hacked despite this you are too stupid to have a computer. Stick to Nintendo. I expect some retard will say steam bad because of it tho.
>>736229835prove it then
my bank has discontinued security questions and now require a temp code sent to my phonehow is this more secure? before, if I lost my phone, they still couldn't access my banking details because they didn't know my security questions. Now if I lose my phone they have free access.thanks, assholes?
>>736231193Bank issue
>>736231193banks still relying on SMS 2fa with all of its issues (sim swapping, interception) is insane to me
>>736226176I'd rather get hacked once a year than have to spend multiple seconds every single time I log in somewhere you fucking niggerThe former is way less of a time waste than the latter
>>736231426>I rather have information stolen than just not logging outSmartest /v/ poster. Clearly you don't deserve to have anything. Give me your credit card information.
>>736225286No one can be trusted with passwordsHacks do happen even to the most prepared
>>736224864>It's annoying to sign inOh no, that thing you do once a month? Damn, that's crazy, cuz
>>736226176>just give your info to everyone, it's for your own good!Oy.
>>736224864>want to login somewhere>QRCode pops up>scan QRCode in Steam app on phone>log in effortlesslyImagine being as gay as you.
>>736230312Sounds like a you issue.
>>736224864Added security is pretty good.
