Because it's easier to write that way.

A good sci-fi setting makes human the strong ones since earth is actually a surprisingly massive planet, and at about the upper bound of escape velocity.
So humans would be stronger but shorter than other aliens.

Tho if you sci-fi setting wants to be realistic then there probably shouldn't be a single strand of human. You'd have a different type of human for every planet as well as countless billions of human who live in space habitats only.

Something that crossed my mind is that humans are literally in the top 0.1% of size and strength of all lifeforms on earth, that that's neither here nor there to our intelligence, that we're basically weaker gorillas/more flexible chimps

We have this psychological "honor" that makes us pay undue attention to the handful of things that are larger than us, surely because they were actual threats to us in prehistory
>the bull, the lion, the great white shark, the elephant
but think for a second about how many animals you could pick up with one fuckin' hand, how they vastly outnumber the few and rare large beasts
imagine if these guys were the ones that were supposed to end up sentient spacefarers
>>
>>736232457
being good at everything and adaptable is a mastery in of itself
>>
I want to see more games where humans are kobold-tier shitters
>>
>>736236382
I guess lean into the things we excel at in our own ecosystem - division of labour is out because that would be needed for space travel. Throwing things? Like, imagine an intergalactic federation all completely flabbergasted that we can do advanced trigonometry instinctively when throwing a ball. All their military tech is also based around projectiles, but the fact we can just casually lob something across the room with precision using our limbs is unthinkable.
>>
>>736236382
Humans have lived in every climate on Earth with only the most rudimentary technology. Since we can get used to most environments we would be explorers and colonizers, and presumably excellent soldiers as well.
>>
>>736236382
Our ability to pack bond with literally anything.
>>
Humanities insatiable wanderlust is what will make it the first space fairing civilization but still behind technologically
Imagine we mastered space travel and space living only to find a planet that knows how teleportation and matter conversion works or some equally magically sci-fi concept but they've never even thought about escaping their atmosphere because they're scared shitless of what might be out there
>>
Unless literally every fucking alien lives on some Star Wars monobiome planet, I see no reason why they wouldn't be as adaptable as we like to circlejerk ourselves as being.
>>
>>736232457
I don't know. If boiled down to it, humans would be ranged pet masters.
>>
>>736236382
"smart enough for space travel" says nothing about individual intelligence. just think how many people drive cars vs how many understand how it works.
>>
>>736237370
You also don't see Dolphins invent the combustion engine.
>>
>>736237918
Most exo planets we currently know of are tidally locked shitholes and monobiomes, so I think humans would be unusual if not completely unique.
>>
>>736232371
Just look at sheer variety of human cultures and civilizations. Doing even 10% of that for some fictional aliens so they can be window dressing in your setting would be a tremendous undertaking. Giving everyone a single major trait is just easier.
>>
>>736237918
Adaptability isn't just physical but psychological as well. Humans in particular are adept at dealing with mental stress better than pretty much any other animal. Something about the brain's mental plasticity and ability to cope with stress that would kill any other animals.

Ballistics.
The very thing that made us dominate the planet and the reason why we're fucked against other animals in the water.
We instinctively calculate ballistics.
Humans can be lots of things but not every human can be anything, yet every human can catch a ball being thrown by instinctively calculating where it's landing and where to intercept it to catch it. Every human can use a ball and accurately enough throw it at an object in a distance to hit it using different speeds and heights based entirely on the weight of the ball in their hand.

Even simple catch is advanced ballistics, almost every sport we play with another object is ballistics. Football is a team game where you calculate ballistics to intercept the ball, to pass it to your team and to score a goal, a goalkeepers job is to calculate ballistics to stop the ball.

Humans are a ballistics species.

I feel like it's stupid to try and make humans stand out using the physical/mental traits of our species. If intelligent species existed and we could meet all of them we would eventually some that possess some or all of the qualities that we do. I guess alien racism is easier to write than trying to invent interesting alien cultures to compare humanity's to. Imagine a human trying to explain anime to a sentient gas cloud.

Humans are omnivores, and we were present in all continents bar Antarctica due to our adaptability (even before we got technology to make that east).
There are animals on this planet that only eat a single species of plant, there are animals that exist only on one continent, most animals either eat just plants or just eat other animals.
It's completely fair to consider us the flexible species.

>>736238683
Another one is sound mimicry.
You can learn to chirp like a bird, howl like a wolf, bark, oink like a pig, cluck like a chicken and so on.
All because these sounds we used to hunt and draw out prey.

Other aliens might not be able to speak other aliens languages because of their anatomy but humans can just copy their sounds. This means alien to alien translation is done through 2 aliens that both speak their own language and understands the others language but can't speak it.
Meanwhile humans can speak the language of aliens which opens up far more aliens they can talk to. Making for great diplomacy and trade.

Have you ever heard of a fic called "The Howler from the Void"? It's a mostly Alien PoV story where the small alien bugs from the pic that finds an human astronaut (who is massive compared to pretty much all of the aliens in the story) that has gone insane from loneliness and they decided to bring him back to their home planet where shit starts hitting the fan pretty soon afterwards.
>>
>>736236382
The typical answer is adaptability/colonization population growth. I wouldn't discount our physicality, there's a decent chance we could be the strongest chads or within the top percentile of races but any advanced space colonizing civilization isn't going to solve wars with muscles so strength is once again going to help with colonization adaptability. The type of shit the normal persona deals with in their daily life, think of the strength gap just between your average woman and your average man and how it applies to daily tasks and workability now apply that to an alien race that is similar in shape but possibly lankier thinner even among males. Like another Anon said we'd end up being the space dwarves capable of growing long beards, being a bit crabby and hardy and liking shiny things.

Outside of that alien races would most likely be defined by quirky cultural differences but not anything too extreme since certain culture foundations are incapable of advancing stages due to shooting themselves in the foot IE look at a company that has an unruly HR department or has progressive stacks.

I like the idea of humans being a race uniquely suited to industrialized war. Like their psychology and the way they arrange their society makes war both easy to justify and convenient to wage.

While other races would be taken aback by the atrocities and staggering waste of life of it all, humans are thinking about how much they hate the other guy and anyone who looks like him, and trying to maximize casualty numbers.

Just look at war in the 21st century. The kind of destructive, illogical, wasteful and hateful behavior people got up to in Afghanistan or Ukraine. The scientist aliens would tap out after a week, the warriors would go extinct after trying to fight a total war with one hand tied behind their back in the name of honor, and the merchants would stop after they realized their opponents would destroy literally everything they own just to deny it to them.

>>736236382
Like other anons have mentioned, the best way to go about this is some seemingly innocuous feature we take for granted. The best idea I can think of to highlight our fairly impressive healing, in conjunction with adrenaline. We might be soft and relatively easy to injure, but we're also well equipped to power through the ghastliest of wounds to stay in a fight/get away from it. We can even recover from those wounds with basic medical treatment, which will only get more impressive as medical treatments get better. Depending on the aliens, they could very easily see us as a whole race of Micheal Myres's. Anything short of completely obliterating our bodies leaves the very real risk of seeing us again.

Organization as Humanity has managed logistics so basically nobody dies of real hunger despite several billion people existing, pack bonding like motherfuckers with basically anything, innovation in technology despite current constraints and inefficient systems, curiosity, fucking (breeding even if you make that an infrastructure), general output of things given pretty good efficiency without needless constraints.

You might go but the aliens would also have this, and sure, but this isn't required. You can have only small levels of organizations or consolidated power instead of more global empire type shit, you can have systematic issues of logistics a plenty, you can have isolationist cultures rule in many places and a lack of empathy creating hostile situations, a tech sector in the aliens that's far less interested in inovation and merely optimizes shit and ignored critical things like behavioral sciences and analytical predictive systems (also tied to logistics which we use today) making them far less curious besides certain objectives (ideological spreading or dogmas, economical growth, etc), and they could be inefficient as fuck. Industrialization doesn't necessarily mean mass production, it means industrial capacity, you will basically never be short of anything in our world due to structures of powers always encouraging inovation, efficiency and cooperation for further growth.

A psychological edge. Humans turn into violent chimps when provoked (sometimes they do it anyways) and can tolerate an infinite amount of suffering as a species as long as its justified with an other to hate.

Aliens would be horrified by the concept of never ending guerilla warfare. Just imagine some advanced scientist race finding one of their scouts mortally wounded and turned into a booby trap. Or seeing a human suicide bomb an alien squad. Or imagine their horror watching human soldiers charge into gunfire again and again in a brutal trench war.

Realistically how is a berserk human going to defeat an alien race that has the capability for space travel? You're telling me none of these bugs came up with the idea of a fucking gun? Even just a sharp stick? We're not armored. An innocuous cut to the thigh can sever an important artery and we're dead in like 3 minutes. The only way I see this working is that the aliens are so fucking scared of the human they don't think any of that will work so they don't try it.

I'm going to sound like a christ cuck but I like the idea that "GOD MADE US IN HIS IMAGE" and think if you explored that in a sci fi setting it would be cool.
Like aliens maybe faster or smarter or stronger but we have the universal creator on our side
>>
>>736245949
He's gets shot twice, tased, and has an artery sliced open throughout the course of the story if you're concerned about that.
>>
>>736246253
Ok, but what if the aliens were also made in their god's image? Are we going to get a sci-fi setting where every culture is a theocracy in perpetual war with its neighbors?
>>
>>736245664
that only affects americans doe
>>
>>736245949
You ever realized that, while that's technically true, you can also eat like 10 shots of 9 millimeter to the core, tank that shit from adrenaline and beat someone to death or stab them into the afterlife.

If you are about 6 times bigger, 12 times stronger and assumedly about 40 times tougher than a smaller species which is used to smaller ballistics or the like, then you are automatically a major fucking threat. Space travel doesn't mean standard troops have fusion plasma guns either, it means they are capable but not likely to have that equipment or the highest standard grade due to basic logistics, distancing from production, economy, availability, cost of operation and gearing up, specific knowledge of maintenance, political influence, budgets which can be affected by all former mentioned things, etc etc.

Wiping out an entire alien race, no, able to be a major fucking threat the same way a krokodil using rhino is in the middle of a playcare filled with Kolibris, yes.
>>
>>736246357
Sounds pretty cool. Various races waging war against each other in the names of their respective gods. Sounds a lot like ancient Greek mythology.
>>
>>736246357
Cook too but that's just 40k
>>
>>736246408
When you put it like that I guess it makes sense. Especially if most forms of life in the universe, or at least where these aliens travel, aren't comprised of human sized creatures. If you're used to travelling around your local galaxy interacting with other small aliens then there's no reason to think you'd need the equivalent of our rhino hunting guns on a simple patrol.
>>
>>736246379
It affects everyone because its not just oil thats getting cocked blocked as an export. Regardless, lots of countries in SE Asia have already started fuel rationing and energy lock downs as infrastructure got blown up as well in the ME. Can take up to 5 years to repair these things. The biggest issues are things for farming, like fertilizers and urea. The Ukrainian war pushed things to the limit, this Iran war pushed it over the limit.

something that might actually be a rare trait is the human capacity to easily bond with non-humans. keeping livestock is one thing, but tons of people love their pets like family and that could be unique to us. humans as the beastmasters of the galaxy, maybe?

Most species would have had to use beasts of burden or dog equivalents to advance though. Otherwise you end up like Sub Sahara Africa or the Aztecs building grand pyramids but getting fucked by a bunch of sickly retards in metal armor. Fire, domestication of animals, tool usage, oral and written, language, cooking all essential.

I kinda view it this way, what little we do know about other potentially habitable planets is earth is high gravity but not high enough where we can't escape with rocket ships and we have seasons which would be rare from what we observed of other planets. I think if we are a master of anything we probably would be the Krogen of our universe.

>Realistically how is a berserk human going to defeat an alien race that has the capability for space travel?
The human isn't really planning to defeat them, he's just running away at first but then he aims to kill their leader, thinking that he's the God known as "The Defiler", nearly puts it off too. The alien's issue is the fact that they are massively underestimating the human (thinking he's just an animal at first), with this character here >>736244730 (effectively Captain Ahab as a bug) being among the first to understand that he's quite intelligent and nearly get him at one point.
>You're telling me none of these bugs came up with the idea of a fucking gun?
They have guns but not the one that can take out being that much bigger than them as a standard loadout. Think of it like trying to kill an elephant with 9mm. They do have more destructive weaponry like antimatter bombs, but those are only for war, not for hunting a massive alien escapee (plus the alien bugs have a massive ego and don't want the other aliens to know that they can't handle this).
>>
It might be funny if instead of figuring out how aliens are different from us may how aliens would try to connect with us, like if they like humans and see us as kin
>Bug species wants a arthopod enthostate, but they insist humans have a exoskeleton
>>736236382
Not better but different would be that humans are a symbiotic species,
Mitochondria, gut microbiome, eyelash mites, ect, earth life might have literally evolved that way uniquly because theres no precedent and that is unique to our ancestry

I wouldn't say it's necessarily hard, it's mostly just amplifying existing cultures on Earth. I think the real problem is is that it's just not interesting or worth the effort to write a truly 'alien' culture, unless it's in an extremely abstract sense in something like Solaris where being unintelligible is the point. Even if you put all the effort into a system where aliens communicate by rhythmically clenching their gas bladders and have completely different values and timeframes to their thought, it wouldn't be worthwhile because in a story people can't meaningfully connect with them.
Even if I, as a writer, think up several unique emotions for an alien like the satisfaction of gaining elevation, it would be impossible to express that meaningfully to a reader in the long term, and even if you wanted to, it would take so much effort to explain that any entertainment value will have been thoroughly sucked out leaving only pointless hypothetical conjecture. There's some fun in that, but not for stories.
