In retrospect, did we overestimate the impact of a FFVII remake? people said it would be the biggest game in history. Now we have it and it's most played by old FFVII fans. FFVII wasn't as big as peopel thought
>>
>>736249539
After people played Remake, its target audience became only the diehard VII fans who were always going to like it no matter what it was.
>>
made me hate the characters and setting. so it's all good.
>>
>>736249539
An actual remake of FF7 would have made more impact. This is Square Enix Action Game #74, and it pissed off the people who expected Final Fantasy 7 Remake would be a remake of Final Fantasy 7.
>>
>>736249539
It's not actually a VII remake and it came out way too late to cash in on VII's popularity. If this was made PS3/360 era it would've exploded but now it's a wet fart packed with out of place memberberries
>>
>>736249761
I think the real mistake is that they turned it into 3 games for some fucking reason. You can't just play it and move on. It's a 7 year release cycle. You have to keep thinking about and being reminded of this failure for nearly a decade.
>>
>>736249539
They only had to keep the story and the writing in the spirit of the original game.
People (rightfully) taped out when the kingdom hearts bullshit started popping out. Not to mention the swath of uninteresting, stupid and unpleasant trash characters from the compilation that add nothing to the story.

So by design the remakes ended up being something that was bound to fail.
>>
arent there like 700 games called final fantasy 7? i know very little about this series but i always see a bunch of different games all called final fantasy vii: [subtitle]
>>
>>736249539
it made me play the real FF7. not touching the remakes until it's complete, in a bundle and less than 10 bucks on sale.
>>
>>736249938
>fail
7R was at 8.5 million sales at the last milestone a year ago.
>>
>>736249539
they didnt make a remake. they skinwalkered the cast and sold some time cop corridor simulator. one of worst "stories", if you can call it that, with mmo tier go fetch side quests and the modern trash rpg action combat. why they expected anyone to enjoy it is a mystery.
>>
>>736249539
If it only were a remake and not a slog fanfic with marvel characters that never shut up
>>
>>736249539
I overestimated it because I thought it was going to suck and it turned out to be great and pretty successful.
>>
>>736249539
If anything, we underestimated just how Square could botch the job just to indulge their pretentious creativity.
>>
>>736249539
In hind sight I wish they kept sickly Cloud from the reveal trailor.
>>
>>736251119
>pretty successful.
You really thought it wasn't going to be very successful? part1?
>>
>>736249539
they missed their train. should've started developming it when they got their first 360 dev kit.
this franchise is completely uninteresting to kids. it's all geezers.
>>
>>736249539
Because it's not the remake people wanted.
>Trilogy gradually released over 7+ years instead of one game
>Story was stretched out and altered to be a sequel to the compilation than a straightforward remake
>Most classic FF fans still see red when presented with action RPG combat
This is for the diehards who will buy and praise anything featuring FF7 characters.
>>
>>736249857
That's the real death knell. Any interest I have in it gets killed by the thought of them taking a game that came out 30 years ago, stretching it out, and selling it to me 3 times over the course of multiple years.
>>
>>736249539
They waited too long. All throughout the 00's final fantasy's identiy as a brand was defined by FF7. FF7 was the only Final Fantasy to get multiple successful sequels and spinoffs until XIII, which was still nowhere near as popular because they were still releasing 7 related content at the time that was mogging it.
There was a point in time when FF7 was the best selling game of all time.
It'd be like if nintendo waited until the past couple of years to remake OOT and Majoras Mask, except if also the remakes are barely anything like the originals and the youngest zoomies and alphags go
>Huh? It's just breath of the wild again...gay!
instead of remaking them faithfully and in a timely manner.
>>
>>736249983
Yeah. FF7 was extremely popular so they made a bunch of spinoff tie ins and sequels and movies and shit. Formally this made an entire branch of FF called "The Compilation of Final Fantasy 7". All of it except the original game was total dookie though.
>>
>>736253148
>There was a point in time when FF7 was the best selling game of all time.
This has literally never been true

People really do have a massively ibflated notion of FF's popularity. It is the biggest JRPG series yes, but nearly every other genre of game outsells it, including wrpgs.

The Witcher 3 alone outsold FF7 and like half the entire FF franchise added on top.
>>
Im just glad we got it at all. Its pretty fun man.
>>
>>736250503
Thats less than the original
>>
>>736249983
In the mid 2000s they made a stupid number of sequels and prequels. They all sucked.
>>
>>736249539
If it was good things would be different. Turning FFVII into a decade long project with shit tier kingdom hearts writing and weaving in the compilation trash that made people turn away from FFVII in the first place was a retarded idea that only the mongoloids responsible for advent children could have assumed would work.
>>
>>736249539
No, the game was a bait and switch and turned the excitement into resentment. it's not rocket science.

the worst part of the changes is it's neither a sequel nor a remake. the new story changes have ruined multiple of the most iconic scenes in the entire franchise at this point, but at the same time they've been too pussy to go all in on it being a sequel. the result is a product with zero identity and reason to exist.
>>
FF7 was unironically just FOTM for the zoomers of the time.
>>
>>736253687
this is one of the reasons why I can't accept criticism of viir. people should be grateful, but instead they bitch.
>>
>>736249539
They took too long to come out with it and splitting it into multiple games across more than one console generation eroded much of its enthusiasm and goodwill. Further still the story and presentation changes made hardcore fans realize they don't really want or need a remake after all before it was even finished.

People who were fans of OG FFVII when it came out have largely aged out of gaming by now.
>>
>>736253585
...anon, FF7 sold more than Pokemon Gold and Silver. Games selling a million copies or more was almost unheard of in the 90's and early 00's, while games like FF7 and Pokemon sold 15 and 12 million respectively by 2001. Why the fuck are you talking about a game that came out almost 20 years after FF7 as if this, somehow, discredits my opinion that the remakes came after FF7's popularity peaked and waned?
>>
>make an ffvii remake for the people who want to like ffvii but not actually play ffvii
>you need to have played ffvii to enjoy it because it's actually a psued meta sequel
>flops
Hmm really quite a mystery
>>
>>736255385
he's intentionally misrepresenting the facts in order to play down ffvii ogs success and to cope with 7rs failure
>7r flopping? um... ff7 was literally never popular lol... 7r is a huge success actually, because ffvii is niche and never sold well
>why are you looking at me like that? I'm telling the truth! I'm 19 years old and remember 1997 perfectly.

It's going to be tricky to knit it together into one game. But I hope, eventually, it will be one seamless epic. There would be nothing else like it.
>>
>>736255385
because he's an esl brownoid slobbering his unwanted opinion on the internet
>>
>>736255385
>>736255550
What's the biggest load of shit you see kids trying to spin about the past?
I can't decide if it's "banjo kazooie sold a billion copies" or "everyone hated ffvii on release for ruining final fantasy - I was there!"
They love that second lie even though they can find very little evidence of anyone actually saying this shit. FFVII was a huge hit. Anyone claiming FF fans hated it are nonsense. Oh, you found a single quote from a forum where a guy says he liked 6 more than 7? Well done.
>>
>>736254997
You obviously don't have to be grateful when a game you don't want comes out. Still, it's nice to see a fun Final Fantasy game instead of more FF15.
>>
>>736253585
>It is the biggest JRPG series yes, but nearly every other genre of game outsells it
I'm really enjoying your pathetic attempt to position FF as both an underdog and a big dog.
>FF is a smol bean franchise... it can't outsell anything...
>but FF is the number one jrpg! So don't even mention dragon quest or persona because FF clears that shit! ARF ARF!!
>>
the amount of uhhh i'm injured so hold up to slowly shuffle towards the goal sections in these games is disgusting
I want some money right now to fix the stickdrift they gave me
>>
>>736249603
I disagree, I think the diehard 7 fans left the second that they saw a time ghost
>>
>>736249539
Whoever's idea it was to make 3 separate games, spread out over two or more console gens, separated by 3 years a game is retarded.
>>
>>736255550
>>736255724
The biggest lie that isn't as easily disproven outside of anecdotes I see is the idea that tank controls were always bad, that everyone hated them, and that there was no excuse for having them after SM64 or whatever. This being despite the fact that one of the best selling games of the era was Resident Evil 2 (5 million copies by 2001) or the 2002 gamecube remake of Resident Evil (2 million copies while shackled to the gamecube) - again keeping in mind that back then just making more than 1 million qualified you for "best seller". Which really just puts the overwhelming success of Pokemon and FF7 into perspective honestly.

Anyway its retarded because as the re-release of REmake showed with the updated control scheme everyone hated and reverted to the OG, certain styles of games such as fixed camera ones absolutely required tank controls. They were also intuitive and just was what people were familiar with at the time, which is why games that eschewed them to make full use of analogue controls like SM64 or Ape Escape had to go out of their way with their tutorials to try and acclimatize the player to the idea of analogue 3D movement.
>>
>>736255927
real fans would have watched youtube videos explaining why the time ghosts are good actually and convinced themselves to like it no matter what happens
>>
>>736256241
Its also worth noting since you're talking about tank controls that Resident Evil HD was the best selling digital title on the PS store when it came out, being a record holder at the time, and that the most popular mod for the 2019 re2 remake is the fixed camera angle mod + tank controls.

The first one was huge when it came out, everyone was playing it. But then people realized they changed a lot of shit for the worse, so it kinda died out. Second one took too long to come out and a lot of people were put off by the changes of the first one so they didn't bother. Now the third one is taking way too long too.

Basically should have just been a single normal remake instead of this weird sequel trilogy shit
>>
>>736256505
that's a fanboy not a real fan, like the people who only watched advent children or people who claim to be massive final fantasy fans and only played XIV
>>
>>736256651
They also decided to remake a completely different game, crisis core, after the cliffhanger from the first remake, and then made THAT remake a timed exclusive for a completely different console than what the first remake was a timed exclusive for, then everyone acts confused about why no one is playing that shit.
>>
>>736256241
I know what you mean. Also anecdotal but I never once had an issue with "tank control" and never heard the term until much later. I knew lots of resident evil fans and never once heard complaints about the controls. Flashforward many years later and I was playing resident evil with a goth who loved horror and sucking my cock behind her boyfriends back (good times) and the second she held the controller she complained about tank controls. Usually I would consider this standard girl gamer bitching but honestly she probably games more than I do. But the fact that she found it "unplayable" immediately tells me tank controls being "bad" is a phenomenon pushed only by people who were late to the game.

At a certain point in history the idea of adapting to a games unique control system became alien because everyone got used to Unreal or whatever leading to standardized controls for everything. Hence the "clunky" meme. Anything that doesn't immediately do what they think the controls should do are considered bad.
>>
>>736256505
to be fair there are people who speed run ff7 (i'm talking beating it HUNDREDS of times) who still like the remake, so I don't really have a leg to stand on. The narrative personally rubs me the wrong way
>>
>>736256241
more of a reviewers thing, reviewers would decide features were outdated as a group and rip into them, devs would listen to them.
>>
ff7 is possibly my favourite game of all time, i played it when i was like 10 years old. i have not even played the 2nd remake yet. 1st one was ok. they aren't ff7.. just because i love ff7 doesn't mean i automatically care about these remakes
>>
>>736255927
>he doesn't know
The people who left are doomers, anon. The real fans are think each game is better than the previous one and they already know that Part 3 is GotY all years.
>>
If Squeerix had any damn sense, they'd release a "director's cut" that omits all the added bullshit soon after they finish shitting out the trilogy.
>>
>>736257678
well for me they're hardly even RPGs, the pacing has been absolutely gutted because you spend so much time in cities doing minigames that it feels like that is the point of the game, and that the "remade" narrative is just tacked on because otherwise no one would get tricked into buying it.

It blows my mind that people like it. Like FF7 had a serious story in the sense that there was quite a lot of gravitas, but all of that is out the window in the remake
