BS1 kind of sucks apart from the ending, which almost redeems it as a game. BS2 is where the game actually gets good, both in terms of gameplay and storytelling.

One of its biggest strengths is that the game is short, so you can complete the full game in a day or perhaps even just an evening. And then the real strength is unironically BS2. You do need to play BS1 before BS2. But because BS1 is such a short game that's a very minor hurdle to get through. And BS1 can still be enjoyed in its own right. But it's BS2 who is amazing.

It's what I love about Dark Souls 1, Bloodborne, Hollow Knight, Underrail, BG3 etc. But I can see how the most basic bitch environments (by design mind you, Mary Sue is a fucking hack) could hamper that. BS2 environments are much more imaginative and weird. And they're especially great if you've read Alice in Wonderland.
