Becuase people weren't obsessed with action combat at the time. They treated it like a action adventure game, such as OOT, where level design and world design mattered more than how "smooth" combat felt. The level design was also unforgiving even compared to modern From entries becuase all of difficulty in Fromsoft games shifted to boss encounters rather than level difficulty/mobs.

I blame post DS3 fags for everything wrong with the franchise in its current state.

People nowadays genuinely can't comprehend how truly great Dark Souls was because people have forgotten how to sit down and simply play a game blind. No streamers you'd seen play the game in clip highlights, no youtubers doing hour long essays explaining everything before you'd ever touched the game, no passive fanbase with decade old fronts, arguments and stale jokes.
It was a console exclusive, it felt close and personal and the only people who talked about it played it and where familiar with it through first hand experience. The game had an actual sense of mystery and adventure. Nobody understood what was going on at the time, you'd miss some content and that was fine because once you go back it becomes that much more impactful to realize it was there all along. Not to mention the entire pvp community that formed, Forest Hunters and Burg pvp was lightning in a bottle.

The second half of Dark Souls is still great. I don't know why people persist with this opinion. New Londo is great, the Archives are great, and the Tomb of Giants is good and tried something unique, literally just bring a light. Lost Izalith is weak, but the middle chunk is fine. Now that the dust has settled, the magic is gone, the lie is no more. Dark Souls was never good. The only good game in the series (or better yet, the genre) is Dark Souls 2 and it's so terribly flawed that it's barely a decent game when measured by the standards of the industry. There are no other good soulslikes, Fromsoft has never released a worthwhile product after 2014 (excluding Scholar the GOAT).

Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3 are the only Fromsoft games with good bosses. Before Bloodborne most bosses were slow, lame, poorly designed and even unfinished. Look at how Ornstein moves in DS1 this nigga's fight was rushed I never understood why people thought this fight was awesome. After DS3 they went overkill and Elden Ring is complete shit because of that. Now every boss in Fromsoft games will do retarded anime triple backflip into delayed attacks with combos for 3 minutes before you can finally try to hit the dude. I thought it was overhated until I played a day one build of the game out of curiosity and now I think it was underhated if anything.
Lost Izalith was so unbelievably bad before the aggro range on the dragon asses was reduced that it almost spoiled the entire game for me. The combination of the extremely bright and loud lava and enemies that are too large to see approaching you and can kill you in one or two hits, and the bed of chaos was fucking cancer. God help you if you didn't know about the hidden bonfire or secret shortcut.

The bosses are more of an extension of DS1's design philosophy of geometric problem solving rather than mechanically sophisticated fights. Plunging attacks, hiding on a ledge the boss can't reach, kiting them off a cliff, using pillars for cover, and so on. It doesn't sound like much, Demons Souls bosses had more contrived gimmicks while Dark Souls usually just asks you to make use of some environmental quirk to shift the fight in your favour. It doesn't want to be an action game. At least until Artorias, which set the blueprint for their boss design in later games. I replay Dark Souls 1 every year and despite its rough spots i'm still in awe of how defining it is.

You have to actively plan your progress route in a way you don't have to think about in any other game. I'm going for a pyro build so I need to rescue Laurentius from the depths, go here for my melee weapon, here for this spell, here to farm twinkling titanite, then visit the blacksmith, you need to understand the geography of the world to map this out. It's not a flat open world where you can just run from A to B, there are real consequences for planning poorly and rewards for planning well.
