MK was the middle ground between super casual brawler type games and serious fighting games. It helped that it had that tekken 3 energy of having fun gimmick modes up until 3D era.

This is my problem with the new games. They tried to be a serious fighting game when the series only got big because of cool fun characters, fatalities and cheesy story. If I wanted a proper fighter, I would play Tekken, SF, Soul Calibur, Smash Bros, Virtua Fighter etc.

For MK I want something casual with a variety of modes, lots of content and unlockables. Not eSports shit.

Since what, MK9 in 2011 they've basically been only making remakes/soft reboots of their series because they're too afraid to move forward. Too be a little fair, that's everyone these days. But no, I have no faith in the series. Mortal kombats biggest issue is scale. Remember when shao khan and his soulnado were super threatening? When goro was actually imposing? Now it doesn't even fucking matter anymore because they increased the powerlevel to some cosmic level shit. Titans that are apparently older than elder gods, blaze bringing about armaggeddon, chronika resetting timelines. It makes everything feel so meaningless.

MK actually has a fun world, people to this day recall how cool Deception, Armageddon, and Shaolin Monks were because they were all about running around the realms. But the lore is such a mess now it doesn't work and even on a more basic level the games just aren't fun
