Halo 2's campaign unironically has one of the best storylines and best-written dialogue in vidya history.

Halo had a really terrible reception back in the day by hardcore Quakefags who transitioned to niche places like this once their time in the sun was up. It's just they were so loud here that newfags picked up on it and kept the hateboner alive for the sake of fitting in despite not even knowing why they were pissed in the first place.

It's because Halo is ez baby mode, mechanically, compared to the boomer shooters of its day, which is because it was released on a console and had to accommodate the limits of controlling with an xbox controller. They hate it because it helped lead to what would eventually create the dude-bro shooter. But unlike all those soulless dude-bro shooters, Halo was trying to make an earnest attempt at a story. Halo 2 may not be the best campaign I've ever played, but its story was surely entertaining from start to finish despite the weird aspects of the plot at times, like the Heretic leader shooting Arbiter while 343 was talking to him.

Ehhhh yeah. If I was going off of pure gameplay then CE does more with less and 3 trimmed off the rough edges remaining from 2 which would make it arguably the worst of the trilogy.
I think the level design and environments in 2 slightly edge out 3 for being the best though.

I including the level design of 2 as part of its awful gameplay. Every fucking level is basically walking down a tight corridor, which opens up into a medium sized area that you are forced to sit at for 15-20 minutes of padding, where you don't get a single checkpoint until after all 8 waves have been killed (really great synergy with the meme legendary difficulty), then some cunt on the radio says you are allowed to the next narrow corridor, which opens up to a medium sized area... It lacks the massive areas of both CE and 3. It's awful.

3 trimmed off (some of) 2's fat but added more fat of it's own. The new brute weapons and vehicles are pretty bad, mostly just worse reskins of the existing covenant weapons. Equipment was a super underwhelming feature.
Meanwhile, 3 removed cool features like the Arbiter's active camo, which all of the Arbiter levels were actively designed around and which made them all feel radically different from Chief levels. You're also not nearly as dependent on getting assists from your Marine allies in 3 as you are in 2, the game's just way easier, which removes a big element of strategy that makes 2 replayable.

It's fine, 3 is better. The levels are like 4 minutes long, the hub is kind of pointless outside of scrounging for the audio drama that doesn't even remotely fit in Halo, and the big finale is literally just a firefight tutorial. I like having more Earth levels but the whole game can be blown through in like 2 hours without even rushing.

the original boomer shooters had LESS complexity than halo 2.
the only reason you even had more buttons were just weapon hotkeys because the complexity of needing to pick and choose between weapons or dual wield a combination of certain weapons wasn't even a thing yet.

All of the complexity the old guard brags about with boomershooters comes from forcing complexity out of the physics engine that was never intended.
People just don't play the same game long enough to do that kind of thing in more complex physics engines.

Because it was a mercy killing. The Flood taking over the galaxy, becoming even more powerful, and expanding to other galaxies to become a universe-tier threat would've been far worse than temporarily depriving the galaxy of all life.
