That was a common complaint about the first game and it's one that the developers clearly heard, because they do make attempts to add more interactivity between the party members and they do a better job of tying the 8 stories together so that they don't feel so disjointed. But it's not completely solved. The game is still "Octopath". It's still based around 8 characters, and when you're in one character's "story", you will feel very disconnected from the other characters aside from some tavern dialog between party members. So yeah, it's better, but not perfect. As I've always said, unfortunately, the "Octopath" gimmick is the worst part of Octopath Traveler.
I don't think it does anything different or exceptional enough to be a JRPG icon, but it's competent and charming enough to satiate any JRPG itch for someone who has already played the classics
