when the fuck does it get good? I just got out of the desert pit with blonde bitch boy and that was one of the worst dungeons Ive ever experienced.
>when the fuck does it get gooddisc 2
>>736281776it never does, you just have to pretend to like it
>>736281776>when the fuck does it get good? After the actual worst dungeon in the game. You're in for some shit if you thought that was bad
if you arent intrigued by whats going on in the game at that point it probably isnt for you.
I think it really picks up after you escape from kislev. the story at least, the gameplay never gets good.
>>736282072then you get to disc 2 and it REALLY picks up as they try to cram 4 games' worth of plot into 5 hours.
Hammer a shit
>>736281913I can tell from this pic alone I will hate this. there has never been a good sewer dungeon ever made. love wandering around with no indication of where the fuck I am and zero visual cues to work with either.
>>736282027I am intrigued by the plot but not if I have to perpetually slog through bad levels and slow battles to get little pieces of it. there's plenty of good story jrpgs with simple and easy gameplay that doesnt feel like a chore. I will persist with this game though because I love 90s squaresoft more than any other dev so Im "supposed" to like this game too.
>>736282245don't forget random encounters with suddenly overleveled enemies
>>736282245Silver lining is, you do get a map to keep on you to reference.Hope you're good with directions though, it acts like a real paper map, doesn't show you where you are on it.
>>736281850HOLY FILTEREDXenogears gatekeeps itself.
>>736281776Yeah the platforming in the mechs is horrible with the encounter rate as high as it is and the battles as boring as they are. There's a part later on disc 1 where you're climbing a tower and it was possibly the least fun time I've ever had playing a jrpg.
>>736282480yeah but it was kino when you realize why the buildings are sideways
>>736282596I already know the moment I stepped into the room let me skip the bullshit platforming
Every fucking day. I refuse to believe that there are actually so many people discovering Xenogears in 2026 and having issues with it.
>>736282708Ive known about it since playing it on a demo disc about 30 years ago. but the game was expensive by the time I was looking to buy it so it passed me by, and playing every single classic game ever made takes a long time so Im just now getting around to this one. sue me
>>736281776If the narrative hasn't peaked your interest you are going to be miserable as fuck trying to get through the prison section and especially >>736281913 . Do yourself a massive favor stop playing the Xeno games after you finish the Saga trilogy. Blade is just generic weeb shit with nothing interesting whatsoever, not even a scant amount of depth. Just modern Persona tier waifufag shit.
it gets good when you close the game and just listen to the ost insteadhttps://youtu.be/tQTd7V0JXBE
>>736281776I got hooked storywise during the desert showdown, gameplay-wise I don't think I ever thought it was outright bad but it was probably becasue I was playing at 4x speed
the tower dungeon is my favorite dungeon in all jrpgs
>>736281776The gameplay never gets good, but just before Disc 2 the story enters MGS2 Arsenal Gear levels of mindfuckery and kino. Stick with it anonhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTWgT3_t5Jk
>>736282902>hasn't peaked your interestpiqued
>>736286039My entire life I've been using the wrong peak and no one has corrected me ever...
>>736281776>when the fuck does it get good? The moment you read "im alpha and omega"
>>736282027tried to replay it a decade ago and got as far as OP before figuring 'hm maybe it's just not as good as i thought'. i know for sure it gets more interesting later but it's kind of a slog.
>>736281776Unironically Disc 2. The schizo greater narrative of Xenogears is what makes it legendary, and it doesn't really take the brakes off until Disc 2. People meme about Disc 2 being a mess and it is but it's a brilliant mess that shines like a diamond. There are a few good parts of Disc 1 though. After the desert is the sewers which is the worst part of the game but pretty much everything after that is ramping upwards (with a small dip in a certain platforming segment)
retard if you dont like the game within the first hour just stop playing it
>>736281913The sewers are fine. The actual worst dungeon is that tower of babel or whatever where you get into encounters while trying to make jumps and then fall all the way back down after the encounter is over.
I want to play this on pc but 1337x doesnt have anything. Now what
>>736287602But the Tower of Babel is really cool aesthetically and has a great payoff. Sewers are just miserable all the way through.
>>736287775download it off sony servers then use psxtract
>>736281913>GOBBLE GOBBLE HP
>when does a jarpig get goodlmaolol evenchortle
Just play the perfect works hack with the encounter rate cut in half , the original game will probably drive you insane especially the final dungeon , that shit is heinous
>>736281776Imagine a world where more than one game in existence was actually kino. Fuck.
>>736287823I genuinely can't remember anything bad about the sewers.
A lot of the game is kind of a slog, but it adds to the overall experience when you look back and see how far you've come, how much the story/plot has unfolded, and how much bullshit you've dealt with to get there. It's intentionally trying to not be a fun road trip adventure, and is hammering in themes of suffering and lack of control spanning generations, with the payoff being self-actualization and with it the power to seize your own destiny. It's worth it in the long run, but I can see a lot of people bouncing off of it because it has a ton of "that part"s.
>>736281776filtered by one of the GOATs
>>736288639Can you remember anything about the sewers? It's a bunch of drab repeating rooms with no music you wander around in circles.
If you aren't interested after the starting village blows up you might as well just go back to watching YouTubers play whatever slop instead and leave playing games to actual human beings.
>>736288639It's only bad if you can't use a map. But there are a lot of retards here.
>>736289169No I think the combat being braindead but extremely repetitive due to the encounter rate and loading times is not playing into any themes the game has
>>736289910I remember there being fans or something you had to mess with, and the pov shots of the boss, Redrum hunting you down.
>>736281776the gameplay kinda stays dogshit the whole time.
Its so funny that the tournament mech combat is so much better than the core turn based gameplay. How do you fuck up something to feel more basic than Dragon Quest?Granted, the mech minigame controls way better than it had any right to.
>>736282708I mean, "issues". Its not like anybody gets stuck on anything. The game isnt particularly hard. Its just a drag.
>>736284019It’s amazing how speeding up gameplay makes some games much more manageable. I actually EV trained and bred Pokémon in emerald recently because I was able to play it at light speed.
I liked the Nortune arc.
>>736290594Valkyrie Profile is what Xenogears gameplay wishes it could have been
If you want to play this game without losing your sanity download duckstation and change the rom read/seek speed to 3x/4x , literally the best decision I've ever made and the game runs incredibly fast with barely any load times
>>736281776The desert pit was the lowest point of the game for me, I hated how frequent the encounters in the game are.Hold on OP, the game gets better.
>>736281776Don't forget to play Valkyrie Profile
>>736281776I gave up around the time I reached Thames. Bad writing, even worse gameplay. I have no idea what people see in it.>b-but it gets good 40 hours i->To know the vintage and quality of a wine one need not drink the whole cask. It must be perfectly easy in half an hour to say whether a book is worth anything or worth nothing. Ten minutes are really sufficient, if one has the instinct for form. Who wants to wade through a dull volume? One tastes it, and that is quite enough-- more than enough, I should imagine.-Oscar Wilde
if xenogears was a VN, it would be the best VN but since it's got lots of platforming, exploring, a world map, cutscenes and battle elements, it's the best jrpg that people cry about because it's 80hrs but slightly unfinished
>>736294076>if xenogears was a VN, it would be the best VNIt wouldn't be, its prose/dialogue writing is too shit for that. Then again, you have retards claiming that Umineko and F/SN are well-written, so I guess I would be calling you guys fags with no taste in VN threads.

>>736281776>when the fuck does it get good?Never. This is a weird situation where people who played a ton of PS1 RPGs were happy to see some new ideas for this PS1 RPG. It's not good by itself, it's just a nice change of pace if you just played FF7 and Legend of Dragoon.
>>736294819>putting shitter 7 and legend of barf in the same category as xenogears
>>736294747Kino or some say Kinoa
>>736294819Xenogears to FF7 is like Crime and Punishment to Death Note. FF7 is excellent enterteinment, but it's not even close to Xenogears depth.Call me pretentious if you want, but it's a matter of ambition
>>736295379>it's a matter of ambitionIf you're saying Xenogears has more ambitions and thus more depth of writing then yes, by circular logic, it must have more depth. We'll just move past FF7 as a criticism of the obsession with technological progress that kills ecosystems. Xenogears has the ambition to be about the soul and God, even covering whether a person should ascend to a higher plane. It also isn't finished. The game constantly just tells you what would have happened if they had more time. There are interesting scenes in Xenogears, but on the whole, it's a clusterfuck of a million competing ideas that can't go together.
>>736281776you have more patience than i did.
>>736288290Im definitely doing this. thanks anon
Xenogears is a total mess and good portion of the dungeons are bad but I still like it, it's got a sense of ambition and style that is not really present in most games anymore.
>>736289169>the game is just pretending to be bad
>>736295379NTA but with Xenogears, it's a bit different because they replace the last 30% of the book with the cliff's notes version and it's a real bummer. There is no game in greater need of a proper remake/retelling than Xenogears.
>>736289979oh wow a starting village in a jrpg getting destroyed, what an incredibly unique and never seen before setup to a story!!
>>736286368Probably because you live in the turd world.
>>736281776Goes from one of the most mid JRPGs ever made to one of the best when you get to Shevat.
>>736287775literally just google [game name] rom and it'll always be the first result you stupid bastard
>>736296245The deep south, so you aren't entirely wrong.
>>736296234neurotypical and functional people don't care about a trope being present in fiction
>>736292247its great but a little overrated imo. what an absolute wet fart disappointment of an ending. and no I didnt get the REAL ending because its literally impossible without a guide and I played it blind which is shit design.
>>736293963oscar wilde was a degenerate gay retard.
>>736296472Sure, but I agree with him (I was able to tell I'd hate his books 30 minutes in)
>>736282902>he says as xenogears and xenosaga are directly referencing 90s mecha anime
>>736296697Better generic weeb shit > waifu weeb shit
>>736282245Oh I see. You are one of those faggots the yellow paints are meant for.
Dont trust this anon. If you are not liking XG by now, just skip it and Saga. Try Blade out.>>736282902>Blade is just generic weeb shit with nothing interesting whatsoeverThats Saga
>>736287602savestate
>>736296234the village destroyed by the protagonist who also kills his own friends
>>736291789that applies to like 95% of jrpgs
>>736296234Name ONE JRPG made before Xenogears which started with the MC love interest and home village getting killed by the MC himself while its getting USAed
>>736298110What do you mean exactly?
>>736295885>>736296231Those are valid points, and I didn't mean to diminish FF7, it’s an incredible achievement. I just wanted to highlight that they operate on two very different scales of ambition. Obviously, Disc 2 is a mess structurally, but I believe the fragments that remain still manage to resonate deeply with the player, though, of course, that depends on one's own taste. In art, there are many "incomplete" masterpieces, take The Brothers Karamazov, for instance, which is technically 'unfinished' as the intended sequel was never written
>>736281776Why Square didn't sell this back to Takahashi yet?
>>736296390You tell im!>>736289979
>>736293963>food analogy
>>736281776It was good from the opening cutscene, which was helped heavily by Yasunori Mitsuda's amazing soundtrack.
>>736296417It's not impossible. The game was designed to be played multiple times, as kids who bought the game when it was released probably did
>>736298603I still have the 20th anniversary blu-ray, pure kino
>>736298818That was the orchestral album we were overdue for. The 2011 one by The Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra was alright but too short.
>>736297759I played it on real hardware.
Xenogears a shit
