Arguably it goes both ways.
There is level design and there are mechanics yes, but the player is still making some choices about how to experience them.

The most obvious example: an arcade game that allows you to continue infinitely if you pump more credits, but the game is also designed around being beatable on 1cc, and there are well-crafted scoring mechanics.
If you really don't want to engage with the latter parts, that's absolutely your fault here. There was some responsibility on you to "make your own fun" indeed, and the devs gave you the tools for it.

You have never played a game you actually love. I wish I didn't because it was live service and is dead now, so I can't play it. When you actually love a game, it is like an SO, you do not get tired of them, you love them and want to spend all the time you have with them. Your premise is false. Bad games don't hold up, and most games only have a limited novelty. If you truly love a game like that, you have developed a complex from material beyond the game that or do not engage enough with the game.
