Do you think action games shine better during boss fights or against normal enemy encounters?
>>736315336Depends on the game. Some of them have systems way better set up for 1v1s, others have way more fun encounters with normal enemies.
>>736315336I usually hate bosses in most action games. All my favorite encounters are with mini-boss tier enemies, especially in DMC. Vergil fights are really good because they’re against a guy you can fight like a normal enemy but he can still go ham on you.
Obviously depends on the game, combat designed around fighting crowds tends to have worse bosses and vise versa
>>736315336Hmm well let's see>DMC bosses mostly suck>NG bosses mostly suck>Bayo bosses mostly suck>all normal and elite enemies in said games are goodI think we have an answer.
Robotron 2084 doesn't really have bosses, but it's a great Action Game.
Commando is an incredible Action Game, and all the "bosses" are just walls. Maybe bosses just aren't necessary?
>>736315336Bosses because they should just be a hard enemy. If a boss requires you to play completely differently than you do against normal enemies, it's a bad boss
>>736315336Boss fights have always been the heart of action games and action games with bad bosses cannot be good.
>>736322229The issue a lot of PS2 and PS3 era action games had was that they tried to mix up the formula for boss fights, so that they didn't work like your typical gameplay. This always sucked and was impossible to do right at a conceptual level.
>>736315336NG4 shines vs both, thank God for Platinum Games.
The best games make normal enemies enough of a threat that they can easily kill you, but are easy enough to defeat that you feel like a superhero, with bosses that are significantly challenging and rewarding to fightThat is why Sekiro is the greatest action rpg QED
>>736315336I'd say bosses usually. Some games are more skewed though, like MGR the bosses are way better than the rest of the game, while DMC1 they had to reuse them over and over so I would say the levels are actually the highlights. DMC3 is in between, lots of kino bosses but also a few misses, and the levels are usually fun. DMC5 is more boss-centric
>>736318235That seems like an arbitrary distinction if you're just saying that Vergil is a regular enemy.
>>736322586>Sekiro>action rpg>rpgGo to bed, retard-kun.
>>736323038you role-play as Sekiro soo...
>>736315336Bosses with additionally spawning enemies are usually the best but most modern action games avoids them.>>736322063Play gun smoke. That old game has some butt clenching bosses and is much harder than Commando overall. Also, there are bosses in commando's sequel but they are not very good,
>>736315336The most important thing in action games with any type of combat are the different combinations of fodder enemies, since you are going to spend most of your time fighting them. Good boss fight is like a nice cherry on top of the cake.
>>736315336I'm going to be that guy and say they should have both in equal measures. As much as I love DMC, enemies have gotten far too easy to dunk on with a little bit of skill. Bosses can generally react a bit better or throw enough curveballs that you have to sweat a bit to style on them, but the basic enemies are way too easy to stun and juggle and they don't compliment each other very well.
>>736315336I'm probably a big outlier, but I've never enjoyed regular enemies in any game. I don't even like them in turn based games, I think all enemies should either be a boss fight or only exist as part of the level design. Just standalone enemies or wave rooms are always boring in my opinion.
i think pic rel is the only fast action game where im fully satisfied with both normal enemies and bosses. Almost everything else feels like either>normal enemies great, bosses boring>bosses are the best part, normal enemies arent very fun
>>736324692have you played Furi?
>>736324692I get that it would be nice if every enemy only appeared once, but they're sort of like a 3d modeled brick where they're supposed to be good enough to use a few times. One of the big seperators between a good game and a bad game is whether fighting the normal enemies is fun every time you do it.
>>736320839>>DMC bosses mostly suckNahAt least in 3 alone. Only Arkham and the Centepide suck. Everyone ranges from okay to very fun. Agni and Rudra are a really fun and hectic combat.
>>736324847Yeah, I tend to gravitate towards games that focuses on bosses more like Furi, Monster Hunter, Final Fantasy Explorers, etc a lot more. Furi is not exactly my usual sort of aesthetic or music, but still a great game.>>736325678It's not so much about them being reused, rather their usage in general. By their nature they're really simple and easy to deal with so unless the game is built specifically around them like a Musou or something like Sifu then they just feel so lackluster. Most games sort of just throw them at you as stat filler, resource drainers, gank squads and so on. I don't find them engaging at all.Obviously there are outliers where I did enjoy them too and I'm not talking about when they're used as a sort of level gimmick, like say the ghosts in the lower levels in Dark Souls. I'm just speaking broadly.
>>736326312Enemies that are simple and easy to deal with are usually the mark of a bad game. DMC3, for example, Hell Lusts or really most enemies are not simple or easy to deal with. The games where you enjoyed fighting the normal enemies are probably better games.
Sekiro does it pretty well, you can 1 shot random enemies, but if you aggro 2-3 enemies at once you're fucked unless you're good at combat, and it's pretty pleasing fighting your way out of such situations
>>736326696I don't think DMC has particularly good enemies though.
>>736325787Forgot to add Cerberus and that shitty chess area
>>736322991I don't like bosses without hitstun.
