It’s the exact opposite of Americanization. Nintendo used to be hands-off and let Western studios do pretty much whatever they wanted with their IPs, but the 1993 movie and CD-i games killed that.The movies are boring because a bunch of suits in Kyoto are making sure they’re as safe and sterile as possible because Mario can never say or do anything that wasn’t approved by a committee ever again. And yes, Illumination is kind of a shit studio in general, but that’s probably why Nintendo chose to partner with them of all people.

I remember when Galaxy came out and everyone kept asking "Mario has been to space, so where does he go from here?" and the same question is coming up again 18 years later, just with a movie instead of a game.
