I don't play WoW so take this with a grain of salt but, can't you earn the subscription by playing? The only rewards nintendo offers you is some towels or stickers or something. You're also paying nintendo to use your internet, not to play a game like WoW.

Subscriptions are the one true form of monetization FOR GAMES THAT REQUIRE CONTINUED COSTS TO MAINTAIN. A MMO requires servers, updates and all kinds of other shit - that's why it works.
