It has been ten years since the closed beta test. Yes, that one, with the vocaroo exchanges here on /v/.
After all that time waiting, private server tools have finally progressed to the point where the game is playable and we have the first actual private server that isn't reverse engineered from leaked executables.

It's very rough still but, in the future, we'll be able to customize and play ToS the same way we can with other MMOs like Ragnarok Online.

Making it 100% like the old system would require using the old client, which is not something anybody wants to do because the game was not optimized and ran at 5 FPS when more than 5 players were on screen.
So it uses a mixture of old and new systems. You don't have class circles and only choose two classes, like in the modern version of ToS. But the max level is only 99, a lot of skills have their old effects, there's no exp quests and the main progression is grinding, and a lot of the mechanics are entirely custom because vanilla tos was poop in that regard as well.

tl;dr it's as vanilla as the modern client allows + custom rebalance

it was just annoying that my character seemed so weak, and when I would ask how to get stronger I would get told to farm some timegated dungeon for drops to farm some other timegated dungeon which would eventually let me get a good weapon like 8 months later.

Build mattered a lot in tos, there was a very long leveling grind and you couldn’t respec. They also ruined lots of builds all the time with new patches. Vgs guild was called future proof, because it got so annoying having to reroll. I liked the patch that had that little daily dungeon quest where you could see your damage meter, to size yourself up against the competition. Different classes were good at different things right. Although farming currency was mostly what I did in that game, it felt pretty comfy. I almost never saw anyone with my build or farming lol, I think everyone would either pay for p2w or just give up competing. Arena was very bad because of the p2w.

I was playing during some jump start event so there were exp boosters and shit to get your level up fast. the people I was getting dpsmogged by though were same level characters though. I think the first time I was playing black rider and the second time was bullet marker.

The modern client doesn't support the old circle system, you have to fully commit to the entirety of a class now.
It's either this or use the old pre-ReBuild patch clients that will play at a constant 2~5 FPS.

I never got to play it as I quit far before it showed up but it also bummed me out when I heard that they changed the weapon slots around so it was something like guns becoming main hand only which kind of killed the whole sword+gun idea of the hackapell and at some point they reworked it to only be melee?
