Apparently the Ashes of Creation studio grabbed the money and ran away. The game is dead. What happened? Didn't they just release?

Unironically can we just stick to playing WoW and OSRS? MMOs are a cannibalistic genre: they can only be created if they leech players from another game. We all win more if we stick to the same 2-3 games. I'll even be nice and let FFXIV, GW2 and Maplestory join the bunch too, but can we agree to play only these five games?
>>
>An old school take on the modern MMORPG
as opposed to an old school take on the non-modern MMORPG?

do wowtards really think their slop is more popular than FFXIV?

I'm actually curious about this. I've been receiving newsletters from these guys for years.
Can someone give me a rundown of what happened in detail? Did the game finally release and its then?

tl;dr known gay sociopath (known to be a sociopath from his days playing another MMO) fleeces investors out of millions, does the absolute bare minimum to fulfill his legal obligations (for example, "releasing the game on Steam") to minimize the likelihood that he'll be prosecuted for fraud, and then dissolves the company because "the board" ("the board" is him and his husband, by the way) is asking him to do things he won't do "out of principle".

Yes, it's a massive scam. It wouldn't be unethical to just kill this scumbag.

>Founder starts a kickstarter to supposedly make his dream MMO
>Claims that he's essentially an eccentric billionaire who has the project fully funded with his own personal fortune and the kickstarter was mostly to gauge interest in the MMO concept
>The development takes 10 years just to begin the alpha, while having weird scammy things like the attempted launch of a spinoff Battle Royale game and selling alpha and beta keys with cosmetics for hundreds of dollars
>Then there's a sudden Steam launch announcement out of nowhere... when the game was still in Alpha 2 with only three zones and bare-bones systems
>Two months later, there's a rug pull
>The founder guy claims that the Board had taken over and were trying to steal the Steam launch money and rug pull
>Everyone responds with "What Board? I thought you said you were funding this game with your own personal fortune."
>Turns out the founder guy had been courting investor money the whole fucking time with promises that it would be the new WoW and it doesn't look like he put a single red cent of his own money into the game
>Now the founder guy is claiming that the investors were plotting to take all the Steam Early Access money and sell off what's left of the game to the Chinese
>The investors claim that the investor guy was scamming the whole time and that the whole project was basically a big embezzlement job from the first, and claim that he used significant amounts of company funds to buy a mansion and go on extravagant vacations and trips.
It's all going to court, and we'll probably learn the whole truth there, but the founder guy is confirmed to have been lying about "I'm just an eccentric billionaire funding my own pet project video game" thing the whole time.

lazypeon is probably balls deep in a dubiously legal thai prostitute as we speak, probably a ladyboy too. dirty little bastard. out of all the places he could've moved to in thailand, he picks pattaya, the sex tourism capital. he's not fooling anyone.

Also, the fuckers still have the game's page up on Steam. They didn't even remove the ability to purchase it, Valve did that themselves. They were straight up going to let people continue on purchasing their dead MMO if Valve didn't do anything.
>>
>>736342030
And this is some random cocksucker, now imagine the amount of money that's embezzled at AAA companies and the amount of drama and corporate backstabbing that happens there on the daily.

It'a no wonder nobody gets shit done and all their games suck.

>Ashes of Creation's biggest and most consistent YouTube blows the whistle that there's nothing there in in the alpha, all the systems they had supposedly been testing for a decade are still in a proof of concept state and assets and zones they had treated as completed and ready to go are taking forever to come out and significant chunks of the desert region were just fucking empty even though they had showcased it as an essentially completed region years back
>Everyone claims he's just crazy and trying to start drama
I hope you've all apologized to Narc.

What people miss isn't mechanics or aesthetics, it's a period of Internet culture that doesn't exist anymore. A time when interacting with so many people over the Internet at the same time was an exciting new frontier, and the average Internet user was of much higher quality. Talking with other players was the game, that's why old MMOs like EverQuest could get away with the entire leveling process being "group up and stand around in a circle waiting for mobs to spawn"
>>
>>736343409
Most of the new big genres are all "singleplayer MMO."

It seems like people basically want to play MMOs now more than ever, it's just that the state of the genre has never been more shit.
>>
>>736343552
Except all of them have actual gameplay that isn't just spamming the same 4 active skills.
>>
>>736343596
Well, yes, as I have said the state of modern MMOs is abysmal. The current mood of the market seems to be for MMO-style games, but the current state of the modern MMO genre is such a trash heap that it cannot capitalize on it. It is a genre geared towards scamming a dwindling playerbase of addicts and whales, most of whom don't even like MMOs or RPGs on a conceptual level.

>>
>>736332643
There aren't any real MMOs that currently exist that I have much interest in playing. At least, no living MMOs that are both actively being developed and have an active playerbase.

And the funny thing is that I don't care about all these stupid gimmicks that the typical "WoWkiller" MMO flaunts around. All I really want is an MMORPG that plays kind of like an online D&D with none of the shit that has ruined modern MMOs (fast travel, flying, transmog, LFG teleports, sharding/layering/phasing, dailies/weeklies, singleplayer cutscene chosen one bullshit, le classless progression meme, le action combat meme, rotations bullshit, etc etc) and is mostly about running dungeons with your bros and interacting in the overworld through shit like professions.

Mmos are a special breed of game because they have so many different systems in them, so they appeal to an extremely broad audience
>number go up
>theorycrafting
>comfy co-op
>raids
>loot whores
>completionists
>PvP
>roleplayers
>idlers
>crafters
>streamers
>chatters
List goes on, but I think Josh dry face was dead wrong that talking to people on the internet isn't interesting anymore, especially in the smartphone era where people are clinically addicted to chatting on discord

> grabbed the money and ran away.
not exactly. the main CEO guy was spending money too frivolously but most of it was going to pay for game development. He lost millions himself making the game and had a nervous breakdown or something. it was hardly a scam.
>Didn't they just release?
early access, which itself was a cash grab / hail mary to see if they could get enough people interested to keep funding going.

The game design wasnt well thought out and they needed like another 6 months to iron things out. Dev was making the idea of a game he thought was cool but was making the age old mistake of haivng PvP and PvE people be on the same server and tried having all these complicated rules for PvP that pissed off both PvE and PvP players. The game got a lot of bad press on EA release instead of blowing up in popularity like devs were hoping. Players were hoping the devs would iron things out eventually but it was too late the EA launch itself was the last gasp.
>>
>>736345141
>they needed like another 6 months to iron things out.
when i say this i dont mean to finish the game i mean to come up with an actual working game design that can satisfy pvp and pve players, because their system was totally fucked up.
