Back in 90-s people were making 3 games in span of 8 years. Two years cycle was normal.
The only thing that changed much is graphics so it must be that. Urine engine is not helping with that, in fact, it make things worse by opening gamedev to millions of indians.

Survivalist: Invisible Strain and Urban Strife filled the void of managing a survivor community in a zombie apocalypse for me. Also (the absolute) State of Decay 2 was good, but it showed where their priorities were: they added more spectacle instead of fleshing out community management. The 3rd will probably be the same.

I played the absolute shit out of it a couple of months back before dropping off. Trying to balance the guns to not be retarded was like pulling teeth. Jumping between different maps as a trader/murderhobo was cool, Solo ends up being a lot easier to manage once you understand how the mechanics work. Becomes a very comfy game just going innawoods in the middle of winter selling your surplus to the various communities for stuff that you can't normally forage.
