Outlast has some intredasting lore, and I appreciate that the writer(s) understand how to slow-walk stupid people from scifi into magic.
But goddamn, I can't be bothered with multiplayer horror. The walking sim (hiding/running sim?) gameplay in the previous games was bad enough.

Trials fixes this a lot. You're still running/hiding, but you're also able to fight back and the objectives go beyond just walking.
