How can ch.8 be so unbelievably bad when ch.1-6 are such masterpieces? I don't think I've ever seen such an absurd drop in quality in anything. Did the author get sudden irrepairable brain damage? That would explain a lot of this later works.

I believe at that point he was too volatile and changed the ending. Originally, Irie was going to be the evil mastermind and from what I can very loosely recall, Satoko was going to find Satoshi in a brain jar.
The thing with Umineko makes "more sense" because his fuckbuddy died halfway through.
