You don’t technically have to fuck with the cards other than a few missable ones, one of which is Seifer from Cid I believe, but the more you refine the better your team will get. When you run into thrustaeveis their cards refine into Tornado’s IIRC and those are OP as fuck for disc 1/2

You are supposed to refine your repeat cards, and duel others for more cards.

Also I recall it was GF that give you the ability to turn enemies into cards.

By disc two the game is so broken becuse if the whole card refine mechanic.

It actually is more fun, same with Zell's limit. Turning the game into a QTE fest is actually more fun. Regular combat is boring, besides attack, you either use GFs and wait for the animation or cast spells(which reduces your junctioned stats)

The last boss doesn't require all that. Just aura and Renzokuken. Even without Lionheart, each phase should die in one round. The only real challenge is Omega Weapon, and you can refine the Laguna card into a bunch of heroes.

You can check wiki for what you need for weapon upgrades. But you can just refine all cards level 1-7. You need to refine one of the minotaur brothers' card for early access Squall final weapon if you into it.

Do notice you can get all rare cards back from Card Club members in Disc 4 IF you have completed Card Club side quest in Balamb Garden.

Never refined unique cards.
