Of course there's a little more to it but that's all you really need to understand to start using them.Jets are only simpler because instead of going up, you're going forward which is the same as walking forward.
Do tanky helis like Mi24 have protections for rotors or do they go down as easily when their sensible areas get hit?

To go forward you'd look towards the floor, not too steep or you'll pull yourself into the floor and occasionally you'll pull yourself up just to be safe. To go up you'd just look at the horizon.If you're playing a game with a heli always do it in first person, you can basically use the above I said to keep yourself orientated until you develop enough spatial reasoning.
