Good single players campaigns don't sell and don't provide any constant revenue. Multiplayer-only games are cheaper to produce and you can make your players addicted with various retention methods like daily login bonus, free skins and roadmaps full of promises.

First they transformed fps into a cod shooting gallery and then people thought that was all fps was so it couldn't hold up a single player experience. Doom kind of realised there was another path but went so far down the gamified mass market slop path it became a mobile rhythm game
