It was a shooter with something closely resembling 3D, nothing came close at the time. And right now it's the most-ported game to have fun on any device with.

I got into doom1&2 and odamex 2 years ago, and had tons of fun, there are tons of wads and you could play something different every time, but I think its pretty much dead these days
