The whole WoD setting is. It sounds cool and interesting but the more you learn the worse it gets. They just got lucky during the mall goth craze in the 90s.
>>
>>736359456
WoD grew too big too quickly for its own good. We didn’t need a whole supplement for fucking mummies, but the writers thought they were obligated to represent ever classic horror monster trope as a whole separate world rather than keeping it simple in scope.

>Why is this franchise such wasted potential bros?

Every other attempt doesn't "get" the actual appeal of VtM. Everything made in the Paradox era has this indulgent, purple prose ridden quality to it. It stews in melodrama over nothing, it's essentially taking the negative stereotype of VtM being for whiny mall goths and treating that as an aspiration.

Bloodlines is actually very light on that stuff, its tone feels very realistic, despite the blatant unreality of things. LaCroix, Nines, Isaac Abrams, and Maximillian Strauss are all major political players in town, and they all talk entirely differently. You can have moments of comedy to break up the darkness, and when something dark or sad happens, it actually has weight behind it, like with Samantha in Hollywood.

The idea of VtM is greater than the sum of its exact lore, and Bloodlines is excellent at delivering on that idea. It's unsurprising to hear that Bloodlines threw out 90% of the official lore on Los Angeles. Redemption wasn't as extreme, but did something similar. If anything, ignoring official lore to make something better is very true to the tabletop.

Here's the thing. Most people couldn't give two shits about VtM. That's not what made most people like Bloodlines. People liked Bloodlines because it has some well designed characters, a somewhat interesting story with enough intrigue to keep you want to keep going and lots and lots and lots of movie references.
>>
>>736359230
retarded writers. vtm tend to attracts some insufferable theatre kids and unhinged schizos and rather then do the rational thing and ignore them, the ppl holding the IP always turn them into writers.
under paradox, the unhinged schizos have lessened but the theatre kids have gotten worse
>>
>>736359230
The best thing about wod is that troika made a game about it. Other than that a lot of the setting is low-quality. And it got a lot worse in later editions. What you love about the game is that it was made by a talented studio that let your imagination run wild.
>>
>>736359230
It's been 22 years, time for acceptance. World of Darkness is mediocre tranny bullshit that received one good adaptation from the people that made Fallout, you don't need to desperately attach yourself to every "franchise" like a rabid consoomer in search of an identity, just enjoy the one good product and then move on.

>LaCroix, Nines, Isaac Abrams, and Maximillian Strauss are all major political players in town, and they all talk entirely differently.

This is the most important thing that is not being taught to modern writers. People speak differently not because solely because they have a different accent or they have brain problems, but because communication is different between individuals. LaCroix's annoyed and dismissive because he's trying to rush to his perceived end-point, which is being an unopposed ruler. Nines talks fast and gets straight to the point because he's seen exactly what happens when people take too long or get comfortable, because the Anarchs lost Los Angeles after holding it for nearly a century. Abrams is able to shift between domineering and encouraging because that's how he handles his business deals in the movie industry, interacting with directors, writers, and actors of all stars and stripes. Strauss speaks calmly, almost slowly, because he's been around for over 300 years, and generally he carefully chooses his words in conversation because he recognizes that being a successful vampire is a marathon, not a sprint.

You can immediately tell what kind of a person they are by conversing with them. It's one of the reasons why people are suckers for Jack's schemes. Jack is loud, uncouth, and unrepentant, but most players keep spilling their guts to him because he does the most insidious thing of all: He simply asks what you're up to without any condescension, just treating it all like a normal conversation. He lets you share what you're doing, asks you what you think about it, and then depending on your answer, he'll either quickly agree with you, or partially agree and then encourage you to do what he really wants, which you'll end up agreeing with. Why does that happen? Because he's a former pirate, a snake, a con artist, and a backstabber. He knows a mark when he sees one, and he'll take advantage of it. In this case, (You).

Wow! So amongst the 0.000000000003% of the population that gives a shit about tabletop games WoD is the second most popular? That's so impressive!

Almost everyone who played Bloodlines does not and never will give a shit about tabletop games. Bloodlines was not made for the people who play the tabletop game. Troika explicitly said they didn't care about the tabletop when making Bloodlines and were surprised that White Wolf let them get away with that.

I can tell you where it came from. Good writing requires multiple perspectives. More accurately, it requires understanding that almost any character being written needs to be written from the position that they believe themselves to be sane and rational. The easiest example of this done competently is Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar", specifically the difference in the way Brutus and Antony communicate to the crowd during Caesar's funeral. Brutus speaks in the common vernacular that would appeal to the plebeian masses, his speech hinging entirely that he committed a murder "not that I [he] loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more." He speaks to the audience as one of them, because that is the most reasonable, rational thing, in Brutus' mind, for him to do. He's trying to make the audience view himself as "one of them", and through him and his actions, agree that Caesar's death was justified.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=op0DQ0Z65iI

Antony, meanwhile, speaks in the famous iambic pentameter that Shakespeare is known for. He speaks elegantly, patrician and above the crowd, because he doesn't need the crowd to love him or view him as an equal, but to make the audience rabid and frenzied and eager to kill Brutus and Cassius. It is specifically this speech that is the more famous. They happen minutes apart, but we all remember the idiom, "Friends, Romans, countrymen, led me your ears."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=101sKhH-lMQ

Modern writers have forgotten that people change their speech based on their goals and ambitions. Their characters speak the same because their goals are inevitably the same, to either preach the gospel the writer themselves believe is true, or to act as a caricature of the very concepts they hate, which is how we get "I AM SILLY" and "WORDS WORDS WORDS" in comic strips and indie video games.

It's baffling how many phenomenal tracks were left out of the finished game. It's one of the main reasons I recommend people play with the "Plus" version of the Unofficial Patch, since it adds back a lot of otherwise unused songs.
