I sort of work for the tax department. It's amazing to me how many people pay hundreds and even thousands of dollars to accountants to do their taxes for them when they could easily do it themselves in about 20 minutes because they have very simple tax affairs.

You're legally obligated to check their work. I have seen accountant error costs lodger's millions and the government's response is just "Too bad. Next time get a better accountant."Also, you have to basically actively engage in tax evasion to go to jail. They put you in prison for mistakes.

>>736363891that's just not true though. most people never get audited even if they make small mistakes. even if you do get audited, if it was an honest mistake (i.e there's only a small amount of money missing), they generally just send you a letter and ask you to pay what you owe them. you're only going to jail if you're seriously evading your taxes

There's some things they can't without being certified by a professional body but that isn't one of them.Also, those are industry certifications anyway, not government. certifications.
