Focus more on parrying than dodging, except for the enemies you can't parry - fight those like a Dark Souls boss.

If you are playing on easy mode(with charm and without the bell) then just spam parry button and the game will beat itself in every combat except Demon of Hatred

On normal mode(charmless+bell) you just need to git gud

you keep playing until it clicks.

Aside from just parry more? Certain attacks will cause a longer stun on hit so there's no risk of getting hit back. Firecrackers are the most obvious example of this, and there are a few other moves like the shoulder bash that are also safer.

Since I accidentally rung the bell I have not noticed a single difference.

It’s a tiny health and damage buff to the enemies but also gives them better loot, it’s a net positive.

It's secretly a rhythm game. You learn enemy attack rhythms and parry in time. Rely on your eyes a bit less except to identify perilous attacks.

Also FUCK that double ape fight. And FUCK Isshin Ashina at the end of Shura run. I saved Shura for my fourth run, so my muscle memory was too finely tuned to the Isshin that climbs out of Genichiro, and it took a lot of deaths to correct that.

The only advice that's worth giving is to get good at deflecting. The rest you'll figure out.

corny ass post

stop mashing buttons like a retard because they buffer your moves into each other. wait half a second for your attacks to connect before attacking again and the game instantly feels like smoother.

By becoming a True Gamer.

Hold L1 to block at first, don't just try to parry everything straight away
This way you can learn the combos and parry timings, then start parrying the combos you get the hang of and block the others
And you can always block the first hit of a combo then use it to index the timing for the rest of the hits, ezmode
Don't do the hirata estate straight away, it's quite punishing when you first unlock it so save it for a bit later
Hit the ogre once or twice then dodge its attack backwards and repeat
Parry the bull's charge, the dodge forward and hit it 3 times, then run away and repeat

Mostly just don't blindly mash, the game punishes you hard for that. That also applies to attacking, wait until after the boss is done with their string and you'll likely actually hit them rather than get deflected, and stop attacking when they deflect you, you'll see extra sparks.
