Over the past decade or so, much like comic book movies, they realized they can actually go the other way and throw tons of memberberries and other in-jokes to the fans and have a degree of accuracy 'work' if you do it well. Ultimately though it still can't be completely offputting or unintelligible to the normalfag who never picked up a controller or even knew it was a game. Mass Effect is already a pretty cinematic game and its story will adapt well to a series, even those who didnt' play the game but liked scifi will have shit to do, so trying to get away from the games is odd , unless its basically some showrunner who wants to do their own thing and is pissed there is an existing narrative framework, or feels something is 'problematic'
