I never understood why people were over the moon for this series when it was "good". I mean yeah sure, you could loot and you could shoot but I never understood what about it that was supposed to be more appealing than any other looter shooter

BL1 is a solid if a bit basic lootershooter. There's nothing too crazy in terms of weapons or skills or characters. The writing is good and strikes a great balance between humor and trying to tell an actual story.
BL2 is a pure numbers game. If you're the type of person who gets really excited at seeing your weapon do +1 more damage then it's the game for you to grind 400 hours in. But otherwise it's worse in level design, the characters, the story, the dialogue, and even the weapon variety isn't much better than BL1.
BL:TPS continues the lineage of BL2 but makes everything a bit more toned down. More linear, less wacky humor, less side content. But I'd argue it's better for it. The story makes no fucking sense in the broader context though.
BL3 finally adds in some much needed variety. Weapon variety is greatly improved, level design is the best it has been yet, there's plenty of side content. And there's plenty of quality of life upgrades as well like 3D maps. The writing is some of the worst ever seen in a video game.
TTW is the game to play. Even better weapon variety, insane skill variety thanks to multiclassing, plenty of side content, much faster leveling compared to the other games, great postgame, and it retains the QOL stuff from BL3 like 3D maps and improved vending machines. It is trying to be a lot more comedic but it fits the setting, and unlike BL3 it isn't just shit writing.
BL4 gets rid off almost every improvement made to date in favor of a really shitty open world. No more 3D maps, worse basic weapon variety in favor of an increased focus on legendaries, impressively shit level design, worse postgame and side content, worse store UIs than even BL1. The writing at least is back to bland instead of offensively bad.
