Depends on the mission. Some it’s best to rush, some it’s best to walk up and turtle.
I found that the majority of missions it’s best to wall in and just spam castles till you have a good enough army to wipe out the enemy. Walling is broken in a lot of missions because you can leave 1 space open and they will all funnel to there where you will build 4 castles.
t. Beaten every mission on hard/legendary

I dunno how people fail to grasp this WC3-like aesthetic that this is aping. The whole point of it was to be chunky and exaggerated to look appealing from a distance and retain visual clarity. Adding lots of dumb shit like skinny twigs and tiny weapons to every thing contradicts its purpose. These fucking people need to learn some basic visual design. I swear, all these RTS games look like shit because nobody understands that a game needs to be designed to be viewed from the perspective of the gameplay, not from some dumb shit perspective like the at-the-ground perspective of the units themselves, or for looking a single model being showcased in a preview or something.
>>
>>736396316
Really underrated game, remember playing it 10 years ago on my school's computer because it's free
>>
>>736396881
Nobody cares about visual clarity anymore. They want high fidelity graphics and detailed animations, gameplay be damned. It's why we have yellow paint everywhere in modern games.
>>
>>736388808

>>
>>736388808

I never even played pvp, I just played campaigns and co-op custom games and shit. The starcraft 2 campaigns on brutal difficulty are great, as is the co-op mode and all the various arcade games you can play. pvp always felt lame like there were less features, you get less units and less upgrades so you're forced into less strategies. Beating an AI is more fun because it's like a puzzle rather than playing against humans which is more unpredictable

You know why they aren't making good SP campaigns anymore? It's simple. They ran out of ideas for campaign missions.
That's where (You) come in, anon. Can you design an interesting campaign mission that will get people interested in RTS again?
>>
>>736400779
An escort mission on one side of the map coupled with a timed defense on the other. Your hero character can't die or you lose. Also static defenses are dogshit.

there aren't enough free-roam type campaigns where map nodes are static maps that can change hands, like Dark Crusade or Warlords Battlecry 3
>>
>>736391434
Play it like it's a pvp match, because that's what the new AI is meant to teach lol

Give curated army options. Warcraft would be pretty easy - have it be some Infinite Dragonflight fuckery where you have a choice of pivotal moments in history to move through. As you go, you can either preserve the timeline, or do something to alter it, recruiting different heroes and factions to make up your army list while the Infinites corrupt others into serving them. At the end of the game, you either restore the timeline safely or get a special ending depending on who's recruited, who's corrupted, and how different events and conflicts played out.
>>
>>736400779
I want a persistent campaign. One that isn't broken up into instanced maps that often set you back to tech level 0 each time.
The only truly comparison I can make to what I'm envisioning is a game like Kenshi, in that your resources and equipment keep getting stronger, and relations to the numerous factions can lead to ever-escalating conflicts both at your home outposts and in their stronghold cities.
>>
>>736388808

>>
>>736388808
why does this thread keep respawning
>>
>>736401757
AoE2 lived off having many civs with the same units. The differences were only in the tech trees like some civs not having access to gunpowder and minor differences like desert civs getting camel riders instead of knights. That way you could have 30 civs but didn't have to relearn everything every time.
Now they added dozens and dozens of unique units. Units replacing standard units for "historical accuracy".
Civilizations were added to the game that never played a role in history. They also added hero units, damage over time and aura effects and so on.
They're slowly turning it into fucking StarCraft but I suppose it won't bother you if you've never played the original.
Getting it for the campaigns only is fine I guess.
>>
>>736403792
Rise of Legends has a campaign with persistent upgrades, though it is instanced. Between every map, you can spend points to unlock new units, improve your heroes, build your personal escort, and enhance your controlled territories, which give persistent bonuses as well as extra reinforcements and abilities for battles on adjacent maps.
>>
>>736388808
I quit RTS because they're about memorizing a build order and clicking really fast, not strategy

Starship Troopers:Terran Command is not half bad, it's got multiple campaigns to it now thanks to the DLC but the main one is decently long. Not much on base building though, it's all about proper unit positioning to make sure sight lines are clear and units aren't trying to shoot through each other while gunning down bugs. Attack+move is not advised here, but leapfrogging units is.
