What killed racing games? I know they used to be tech demos but come on now, people love racing IRL, espcially NASCAR
I hate hags
Car makers don't want to see their cars being shown in illegal street races and people won't buy racing games if le red horse car isn't featured in it.

>>736389209Lack of enthusiasm for cars. It's a dying interest because new cars suck fucking ass.
>>736389539This, nobody wants to race in cuckovers and SUVs. Even Ferrari and Porsche make them now.
>>736389209They couldn't live up to the GOAT.
>>736389209give me one(1) good reason why a sim racing game wouldn't work with kart-racer style power ups
>>736389852Real life racing is technical and deep enough to keep it interesting, you can also have other stuff like guns
>>736389852Because even kart racing games would be better without them. turning a skill based competition into a gambling game makes everything shitty and mindless. The real question is why all kart racers don't have sim physics, Id play Mario kart with a FFB racing wheel and a gear stick.
Essentially a combination of several factors caused a further splitting of the genre and then its "death". In a rough timeline order>Sony doesn't have a first party racing launch title for the ps4>namco didn't make ridge racer either>the end of the ps360 generation was pushing for open worlds in games or gtfo and that poses a lot of extra design challenge for racing games which only a few studios managed to do well at>need for speed was still in full slop mode>the sim racing crowd that had always existed started to show - mainly on PC - they will pay any price for their sim needs which started to create an even more distinct divide in the player base>EA gobbled up a few of the last standing devs capable of making good racing games>R* san diego was locked into just being a tech support studio for GTAThis meant the long standing AA backbone of the genre basically died in about 2-3 years as recognisable franchises vanished and many studios didn't want to take risks (see: split/second and blur and how they turned out). The indie scene took a few years to get rolling as that was primarily in the "muh (s)nes" period though it is now in a sort of "muh virtua racing" period but we really need them to get to the point of aping psx style games for them to hit their stride. Consider that for somewhat mainstream gaming about the only decent to high budget games/franchises left standing are forza horizon, gran turismo and what, wreckfest?BallisticNG carried the wipeout torch for years but that is now feature complete and not getting any new content. Grip was kinda-but-not-quite rollcage (it is getting a sequel too so keep an eye out for that soon™). A bunch of RC racers have turned up in the pc space but most are pretty rough and don't really surpass re-volt. This >>736389731 is finally getting something resembling a sequel 26 years later in the form of galactic racer. Screamer is....not the screamer people remember, TXR is niche and lmao solar crown.
Because GTA 3 happened. GTA does arcade racing good enough to be the default standard racing game. If someone want to race now they just log into GTAO and pick a race. The cars are good enough while traffic, pedestrians and guns add variety. I think the last racing game that tried to add variety was Split/Second, but Disney censorship prevented it from doing anything better than Burnount: Revenge. Notice how Burnout Paradise is basically GTA without guns or peds. Remember The Italian Job/LA Heist or Driv3r? GTA more or less replaced all of that.
>>736389451Also, now that I looked into it there was a lawsuit about licensing cars in video games and Activision won it
>>736389209>people love racing IRL, espcially NASCARFan interest in actual racing has been stagnant for a while. F1 only got a boost in popularity because of their reality TV show, and the audience for that isn't the audience for games.
>>736389209Nothing, it's split in between Sim racers and arcade racers. Both have strong fan bases. The Sim racers always bitch and moan about arcade like racers because theyre more focused on the fun factor that a Sim. Yeah, I grew up with grand tourismo and early forza. Did I like doing literally 200 laps next to a 3-5 lap race with action packed fun? No, I wanted more fun. But im not taking from Sim racers, because I get it. I just wouldn't have a $10,000 Sim set up and buy an actual car.
>>736389209Copy paste brick-like driving model in every single game. Since 2010 all of the titles play the same as if all the studios used same crappy premade.
>>736390624Ok. I'm lying, some of those sim set ups look kind of cool and fun. Especially the ones that emulate it the best way possible. Like noticeable changes in handling, shifting, etc, and having to use real life driving skills.
>>736390504>and the audience for that isn't the audience for gamesThey aren't really the audience for racing either. As far as I can tell they're just focused on the drama with racing as a backdrop.
>>736390886I dont know about Nascar, ive seen it since I was a kid and went to actual NASCAR races. Those fuckers are louder than you think, and that smell of racing fuel and burning rubber. Oh my goodness. Oh my goodness.

>>736391219Horizons fun, can't wait for Japan. We've been wanting that for years.
The thing about turn left is it doesn't have much international appeal so anyone making a game that keeps die hard burgers happy is walking a very fine line of investing enough money to make it good vs what they can expect to get back given the rest of the world isn't going to care a great deal.turn left 2003 best game ever btw

The only racing games ive ever liked where star wars pod racer on the n64 and f zero gx on the GCN. >>736394626The best car in the game is the abeille though.
>>736394627Sure I can. It does two things. It remove tons of FUNCTIONAL cars out of the markets (and destroy them), and the car industry get to crank up the prices of new cars now that the supply of cars dwindle. So a kid that need a car to drive to college or their first jobs won't be spending a few hundreds for a used car, they will have to spend thousands. That is more than enough to prevent the newer generation from getting into cars in general.
>>736394954meanwhile I played racing games while i was 4 years old and they were my favouritenow i'm 33 and don't even own a carit's like saying kids aren't getting into arena fps anymore because they don't have the means to shoot up schools before the libs took overvideogames aren't real life, forza zoomers will never buy a jewgatti veyron no matter how much they watch andrew tate videos

>>736396047>paris to berlin in a single tank.keep talking
>>736395641It is very relevant though. Games are often a fulfilment of a specific kind of fantasy, a fantasy that is implanted in your head by fiction or prevailing cultural trends. This is why so many people want to drift around mountain courses while eurobeat plays or why people want to have ww2 dogfights in space or fight kaiju in mechs, these aren't interests that sprout from nothing.we're roughly the same age so I also remember dinosaurs being a gigantic cultural touchstone, they aren't universal and the only reason you like them is you grew up in the 90s. Jurassic park was massive, state broadcasters like the BBC were making documentaries about them while fantasy tv shows and videogames were shitting out dinosaur media, that is gone and I cant remember the last time I thought about them or saw any other kid who gives a shit.
>>736396256my nephew of 6 is also apeshit about dinosaurs right now(i gave him hot wheels and while thankful i'm not sure he was really into it)
>>736396256I think the inverse is also true. People with no prior interest become car guys after playing games as a kid. I feel like 50% of skateboarders today got into the hobby through tony hawk and skate
Been having a blast on Screamer.
>>736396057That shit sucked.
>>736396454I think that's because those games tap into a pre-existing cultural well that is actually appealing. It is very rare for a game to be cool or appealing enough on its own to invent and then carry an entire subculture. wipeout is actually an interesting example, I think it was so cool it cemented futuristic racing games as an influential fantasy well beyond the standard nostalgic, autistic tendie shit.Boys were pre-programmed to have some interest in cars even as toddlers, it is still in the media they consume and the toys they are given, though much weaker these days.>>736396440maybe there is some autistic obsession with dinosaurs among nerdy kids that im unaware of. There could also be some current cartoon with dinosaurs that is spreading the autism, all I know is they were an unavoidable cultural obsession much like cars were and it was almost impossible to find kids who weren't thinking about them in the 90s.
>>736397471>tap into a pre-existing cultural well that is actually appealingthat was what I meant>well beyond the standard nostalgic, autistic tendie shit.the fuck you just say to me you little bitch?and as for the dinosaurs thingi think just telling a kid that once upon a time earth was populated by fuck huge dragon lizards is enough to blow their mindsthat cousin has this a3 notebook filled with dinosaurs and statistics about them and what they eat etc. while they battle it outi'm pretty sure he's also autistic but he's young and has two sisters so i'm not sure he just acts strange sometimes because he feels left out

Now admittedly NFS1 is still plain (though it tickles me in a way arcade games older than it or the high quality 2d racers on home consoles does) but from 2 onwards colour does a lot of heavy lifting in track design.I really should make some good quality webms of NFS2 now that I think about it.

Their other favourite thing is congestion charges like London despite those being ineffective and just creating worse diesel bus pollution.
>>736405326While spyro is by nature more fantastical one thing early NFS did - at least to me - is paint a picture of a place that could exist. The sort of places where supercar manufacturers would ship their car out along with an entire camera team just to get promotional bullshots of. Wait until the sun is dipping just at the right time to get that 3/4 angle shot of the porsche 911 in stuttgart black or the perfectly still lake to park a lotus next to.also: long lotus is long because the menus aren't aspect corrected

Anybody remember the Rush game with the stunt mode. Shit was amazing. Zoomers don’t drive usually nowadays by design and they only play 2-3 games exclusively after being lobotomized by mobile games.

>>736406000I would play this 2 player for hours. Insane that something like this hasn't been replicated since
>>736405615I feel like TNFS is just kinda flat but a bit TOO 'it's real but in shit quality' because of it and NFS2's floating-in-the-void tracks are funny when you do big jumps and see the v o i d everywhere, but 3 is where they really hit the stride and it's like you said, a place that could exist, but mixed just enough with places that obviously do not, can not and will not. Like Hometown is just "EA Vancouver drove down to the PNW and recreated what they saw," or Redrock Ridge being "hmm yes I think this is what the desert looked like when I watched the X-Files," but then you have Aquatica's giant-ass underwater tunnel or Empire City in general which veer into completely fantastical yet still feel like they fit because that feeling of not-quite-reality echoes through all the menus and music and the CHECKERBOARD EGG and so on.>Hot Pursuit 2's track theming is almost a clone of NFS3's, especially the PS2 exclusive desert tracks cloning Redrock Ridge's split highway and giant dinosaur skeletons and mine tunnels and such>but they didn't remake Empire City or Atlanticabig sad forever
>double wide covered bridges don't actually exist, especially not in pairs of 2>drove all over the northwest in ATS and never found a Hometown analogue for a screenshot

>>7364110041. Too much focus on battery/energy managementThe biggest change is the ~50/50 split between engine and electric power.Drivers constantly have to harvest and deploy energyThey sometimes have to lift off the throttle on straights to rechargeCars can suddenly lose power when the battery runs out (“super-clipping”)This leads to weird situations where a driver is flat-out but still slowing downMany drivers say this feels unnatural and frustrating.-----------------------------------------------------------2. Racing feels “artificial”Instead of pushing flat-out, drivers are managing systems:Overtakes depend on who has battery left, not just skillThere’s even a manual boost system compared to Mario Kart Drivers like Lando Norris have literally called it “artificial” racingAnd Max Verstappen went as far as saying it’s “not racing” and “not fun at all”-----------------------------------------------------------3. Less emphasis on driver skill & braveryA lot of veterans hate this part:You’re rewarded for saving energy, not attackingDrivers brake earlier or avoid pushing to optimize battery useSome say it removes the “edge” and risk-taking from F1It shifts the sport from “who is fastest” “who manages systems best”
>>736404838only for a remake to do some global illumination shit and the street lights look all fucked up. Someone posted a picture of the 90s with the orange lights and stars in the sky because the light pollution wasn't that bad. Now in modern games you get shitty sky map backgrounds with subpar sunsets because they let the engine deal with it all and lights that lack any atmosphere just the generic white bright illumination.

I miss the era of grabbing a sports car or muscle car and driving into things while nu-metal plays and maybe being chased by the cops. Maybe it's like disco, it came and went.

>>736390424That and the lawsuits about guns made gaming companies start being a lot more stingy about shit in general.
