What killed racing games? I know they used to be tech demos but come on now, people love racing IRL, espcially NASCAR

Car makers don't want to see their cars being shown in illegal street races and people won't buy racing games if le red horse car isn't featured in it.

give me one(1) good reason why a sim racing game wouldn't work with kart-racer style power ups
>>
>>736389852
Real life racing is technical and deep enough to keep it interesting, you can also have other stuff like guns
>>
>>736389852
Because even kart racing games would be better without them. turning a skill based competition into a gambling game makes everything shitty and mindless.

The real question is why all kart racers don't have sim physics, Id play Mario kart with a FFB racing wheel and a gear stick.

Essentially a combination of several factors caused a further splitting of the genre and then its "death". In a rough timeline order

>Sony doesn't have a first party racing launch title for the ps4
>namco didn't make ridge racer either
>the end of the ps360 generation was pushing for open worlds in games or gtfo and that poses a lot of extra design challenge for racing games which only a few studios managed to do well at
>need for speed was still in full slop mode
>the sim racing crowd that had always existed started to show - mainly on PC - they will pay any price for their sim needs which started to create an even more distinct divide in the player base
>EA gobbled up a few of the last standing devs capable of making good racing games
>R* san diego was locked into just being a tech support studio for GTA

This meant the long standing AA backbone of the genre basically died in about 2-3 years as recognisable franchises vanished and many studios didn't want to take risks (see: split/second and blur and how they turned out). The indie scene took a few years to get rolling as that was primarily in the "muh (s)nes" period though it is now in a sort of "muh virtua racing" period but we really need them to get to the point of aping psx style games for them to hit their stride. Consider that for somewhat mainstream gaming about the only decent to high budget games/franchises left standing are forza horizon, gran turismo and what, wreckfest?

BallisticNG carried the wipeout torch for years but that is now feature complete and not getting any new content. Grip was kinda-but-not-quite rollcage (it is getting a sequel too so keep an eye out for that soon™). A bunch of RC racers have turned up in the pc space but most are pretty rough and don't really surpass re-volt. This >>736389731 is finally getting something resembling a sequel 26 years later in the form of galactic racer. Screamer is....not the screamer people remember, TXR is niche and lmao solar crown.
>>
Because GTA 3 happened. GTA does arcade racing good enough to be the default standard racing game. If someone want to race now they just log into GTAO and pick a race. The cars are good enough while traffic, pedestrians and guns add variety. I think the last racing game that tried to add variety was Split/Second, but Disney censorship prevented it from doing anything better than Burnount: Revenge. Notice how Burnout Paradise is basically GTA without guns or peds. Remember The Italian Job/LA Heist or Driv3r? GTA more or less replaced all of that.
>>
>>736389451
Also, now that I looked into it there was a lawsuit about licensing cars in video games and Activision won it
>>
>>736389209
>people love racing IRL, espcially NASCAR
Fan interest in actual racing has been stagnant for a while. F1 only got a boost in popularity because of their reality TV show, and the audience for that isn't the audience for games.
>>
>>736389209
Nothing, it's split in between Sim racers and arcade racers. Both have strong fan bases. The Sim racers always bitch and moan about arcade like racers because theyre more focused on the fun factor that a Sim. Yeah, I grew up with grand tourismo and early forza. Did I like doing literally 200 laps next to a 3-5 lap race with action packed fun? No, I wanted more fun. But im not taking from Sim racers, because I get it. I just wouldn't have a $10,000 Sim set up and buy an actual car.
>>
>>736389209
Copy paste brick-like driving model in every single game. Since 2010 all of the titles play the same as if all the studios used same crappy premade.
>>
>>736390624
Ok. I'm lying, some of those sim set ups look kind of cool and fun. Especially the ones that emulate it the best way possible. Like noticeable changes in handling, shifting, etc, and having to use real life driving skills.
>>
>>736390504
>and the audience for that isn't the audience for games
They aren't really the audience for racing either. As far as I can tell they're just focused on the drama with racing as a backdrop.
>>
>>736390886

>>
The thing about turn left is it doesn't have much international appeal so anyone making a game that keeps die hard burgers happy is walking a very fine line of investing enough money to make it good vs what they can expect to get back given the rest of the world isn't going to care a great deal.

Sure I can. It does two things. It remove tons of FUNCTIONAL cars out of the markets (and destroy them), and the car industry get to crank up the prices of new cars now that the supply of cars dwindle. So a kid that need a car to drive to college or their first jobs won't be spending a few hundreds for a used car, they will have to spend thousands. That is more than enough to prevent the newer generation from getting into cars in general.

It is very relevant though. Games are often a fulfilment of a specific kind of fantasy, a fantasy that is implanted in your head by fiction or prevailing cultural trends. This is why so many people want to drift around mountain courses while eurobeat plays or why people want to have ww2 dogfights in space or fight kaiju in mechs, these aren't interests that sprout from nothing.

we're roughly the same age so I also remember dinosaurs being a gigantic cultural touchstone, they aren't universal and the only reason you like them is you grew up in the 90s. Jurassic park was massive, state broadcasters like the BBC were making documentaries about them while fantasy tv shows and videogames were shitting out dinosaur media, that is gone and I cant remember the last time I thought about them or saw any other kid who gives a shit.
>>
>>736396256
my nephew of 6 is also apeshit about dinosaurs right now

(i gave him hot wheels and while thankful i'm not sure he was really into it)
>>
>>736396256
I think the inverse is also true. People with no prior interest become car guys after playing games as a kid. I feel like 50% of skateboarders today got into the hobby through tony hawk and skate
>>
Been having a blast on Screamer.
>>
>>736396057
That shit sucked.
>>
>>736396454
I think that's because those games tap into a pre-existing cultural well that is actually appealing. It is very rare for a game to be cool or appealing enough on its own to invent and then carry an entire subculture.

wipeout is actually an interesting example, I think it was so cool it cemented futuristic racing games as an influential fantasy well beyond the standard nostalgic, autistic tendie shit.

Boys were pre-programmed to have some interest in cars even as toddlers, it is still in the media they consume and the toys they are given, though much weaker these days.

>>736396440
maybe there is some autistic obsession with dinosaurs among nerdy kids that im unaware of. There could also be some current cartoon with dinosaurs that is spreading the autism, all I know is they were an unavoidable cultural obsession much like cars were and it was almost impossible to find kids who weren't thinking about them in the 90s.
>>
>>736397471
>tap into a pre-existing cultural well that is actually appealing
that was what I meant

>well beyond the standard nostalgic, autistic tendie shit.
the fuck you just say to me you little bitch?

and as for the dinosaurs thing
i think just telling a kid that once upon a time earth was populated by fuck huge dragon lizards is enough to blow their minds

that cousin has this a3 notebook filled with dinosaurs and statistics about them and what they eat etc. while they battle it out
i'm pretty sure he's also autistic but he's young and has two sisters so i'm not sure he just acts strange sometimes because he feels left out

Bugbear made the mistake of launching the 2nd game with basically no content. Even if they had included a bunch of wreckfest 1 tracks with an art pass to make them a little fancier it would've gone a long way to not make it feel so barebones while they redo the car models for the enhanced destruction.

At least this time though we aren't getting 6 months of blogposts going "lol we broke the physics engine completely in a re-write look at how wacky the cars behave xD". i'm still salty said physics rebuild stiffened everything up as they had to account for a console release

One thing NFS always did well in those early days was - as you say - a use of colour to break up the limited textures on display. Now admittedly NFS1 is still plain (though it tickles me in a way arcade games older than it or the high quality 2d racers on home consoles does) but from 2 onwards colour does a lot of heavy lifting in track design.

I really should make some good quality webms of NFS2 now that I think about it.

Canada too. In urban planning there is a massive push now to remove all parking requirements from zoning ordinances/bylaws. The idea is to force people to take their shitty transit full of fucking hobos and creeps. They are doing this to fight “climate change” and cars are European and therefor racist, oppressive colonialism. Their other favourite thing is congestion charges like London despite those being ineffective and just creating worse diesel bus pollution.
>>
>>736405326
While spyro is by nature more fantastical one thing early NFS did - at least to me - is paint a picture of a place that could exist. The sort of places where supercar manufacturers would ship their car out along with an entire camera team just to get promotional bullshots of. Wait until the sun is dipping just at the right time to get that 3/4 angle shot of the porsche 911 in stuttgart black or the perfectly still lake to park a lotus next to.

I feel like TNFS is just kinda flat but a bit TOO 'it's real but in shit quality' because of it and NFS2's floating-in-the-void tracks are funny when you do big jumps and see the v o i d everywhere, but 3 is where they really hit the stride and it's like you said, a place that could exist, but mixed just enough with places that obviously do not, can not and will not. Like Hometown is just "EA Vancouver drove down to the PNW and recreated what they saw," or Redrock Ridge being "hmm yes I think this is what the desert looked like when I watched the X-Files," but then you have Aquatica's giant-ass underwater tunnel or Empire City in general which veer into completely fantastical yet still feel like they fit because that feeling of not-quite-reality echoes through all the menus and music and the CHECKERBOARD EGG and so on.
>Hot Pursuit 2's track theming is almost a clone of NFS3's, especially the PS2 exclusive desert tracks cloning Redrock Ridge's split highway and giant dinosaur skeletons and mine tunnels and such

1. Too much focus on battery/energy management

The biggest change is the ~50/50 split between engine and electric power.

Drivers constantly have to harvest and deploy energy
They sometimes have to lift off the throttle on straights to recharge
Cars can suddenly lose power when the battery runs out (“super-clipping”)

This leads to weird situations where a driver is flat-out but still slowing down

Many drivers say this feels unnatural and frustrating.

-----------------------------------------------------------

2. Racing feels “artificial”

Instead of pushing flat-out, drivers are managing systems:

Overtakes depend on who has battery left, not just skill
There’s even a manual boost system compared to Mario Kart

Drivers like Lando Norris have literally called it “artificial” racing

And Max Verstappen went as far as saying it’s “not racing” and “not fun at all”

-----------------------------------------------------------

3. Less emphasis on driver skill & bravery

A lot of veterans hate this part:

You’re rewarded for saving energy, not attacking
Drivers brake earlier or avoid pushing to optimize battery use
Some say it removes the “edge” and risk-taking from F1

It shifts the sport from “who is fastest” “who manages systems best”
>>
>>736404838
only for a remake to do some global illumination shit and the street lights look all fucked up. Someone posted a picture of the 90s with the orange lights and stars in the sky because the light pollution wasn't that bad. Now in modern games you get shitty sky map backgrounds with subpar sunsets because they let the engine deal with it all and lights that lack any atmosphere just the generic white bright illumination.

because racing games are fucking boring. the novelty of 3D has long worn off and f&f isnt popular anymore, the genre has fallen back into just being simslop catered to autists that can barely be considered a game, or worthless library padding so companies can show off their newest graphicsslop. if more racing games thought outside the box and had actually interesting stories and characters, people would like them way more and they would be able to stand alongside other games. everybody loves driver san francisco whether they like cars or not, and the story is pretty barebones. but it has its moments and it has a really cool gimmick with the shift mechanic which opens all kinds of gameplay possibilities, which makes it fun even for someone who cant instantly recognize all the cars included

They don't know how to make interesting stories about racing because it is a boomer subculture they didn't experience. They think the fantasy is about being a social media influencer, a celebrity motorsports gayboy or a pride parade attendee. Stories about drifting shitboxes up and down mountains or blasting down highways comes from proximity to real kids doing stupid but cool shit with their cars.

The millenials making forza horizon 6 are making farming simulator trailers and are talking about evoking ghibli, they are completely disconnected from even fictional car culture.

I mean, we have race stories in film, television, no one really gawks at most of that besides Fast & Furious being the absurdity it became. Rivalries, championships, the thrill of the risk involved, trying to make a name for oneself is tales as old as time but people love that shit when it's done right. Modern Need for Speed and especially fucking Unbound is NOT done right by comparison. There's just something bizarre about modern game stuff that's the most family friendly things possible despite the swearing tossed around, a power fantasy without the tension or intrigue.

4 is easy and it's fun.

i want to try this out since i like story games but i dont want to play some shitty ai generated slop and i dont trust milestone to not do that so i will probably just sit it out. people seem to generally like it on steam but people who expected it to be burnout or most wanted but with aur tee ecks really hate it
>>
>>736417750
5 is just 4 but in mexico with more cars. which is just 3 but in scotland with more cars. i liked treasure island more than the rally dlc though

Just take a guess what 6 will be like.

Racing down the fortune island mountain at night in the middle of a thunderstorm (bonus points if you have HDR on) is absolutely exquisite.

yeah, codemasters bought slightly mad studios and then cm itself was bought by EA, they worked on NFS Unbound and were promptly dissolved
>>
>>736418146
No, not yet
Their parent company filed for insolvency
They might be able to keep making games if they are sold to someone or somehow their parent company find money to pay back the loans
>>
>>736395654
explain please, I am genuinely curious why you'd think that
>>
>>736418267

To summarize, CM/EA botched EA Sports WRC. Then the WRC license went back to Nacon. KT/Nacon screwed up TDU Solar Crown, and is suffering financially. Codemasters is history, KT Racing might still survive to continue the WRC series. Which would be good because they have very recent experience working with the title and put out genuinely good rally games (with some jank and bugs etc., but really good tracks).

>good multiplayer
Is the penalty system still bad? I used to play GT Sport online and eventually quit because of the penalty system, repeated races and PSN price increases.
>>
Solar crown is an abomination.

They are trying to fix it, and some people have started enjoying it I heard. Would be nice since the concept is good
>>
>>736419284
I feel nostalgic just by watching that.... Plus saddened, I wish there was a game where you could tune your own car with custom art, basically jpgs a la CS 1.6 and blast custom music that other players could hear
>>
>>736419975
i tell ye xmas 2003 was pretty great for me as I got that (for ps2) as a present. Fun times. These days I play the pc version because of all the advantages modern computing offers but it does still hit the same feels.

is the online still fucked on wrc generations? steam reviews make it sound like the game is basically unplayable now

all current affordable cars look ugly as fuck. all have that same shitty suv single mom look. idk how to explain it. just wish old car designs would make a comeback on shit that is affordable.
>>
>>736421243
I haven't heard about that. But I specifically did not buy Generations after 10 because it had some forced online account creation BS. V-Rally 4 also had crashing issues after KT put the servers down, so I did not buy that one either.

Environmental regulations (everything is "smooth" without clear shapes or identity) and most people have garbage taste (digital panels and "futuristic" look) my guess

>Environmental regulations (everything is "smooth" without clear shapes or identity)
how does everything being smooth and ugly helps with environmental regulations?
>>
>>736423609
Angel studios and maybe criterion (but only once) were the only people to get it right.

Aerodynamic design for fuel efficiency. Makes the average car designs look uglier. But I don't know why Zonda, Bugatti etc. is also a trend, they could do better instead of these abominations

Isn't F1 like horse racing? The smaller and lighter the driver, the better?

There is a reason why all active F1 drivers are lean and mean manlets.

Racing was one of those extra genres I always owned one or two titles of and played for something different and then those motherfucker tried to start charging me extra for shit and I decided I didn't need a racing game THAT much. I still buy them on sale for under 10 bucks every once in a while.

This makes me wonder how many people actually read the staggering amount of text information in GT1 and 2. Not only did all the how to drive instructions and principles the license tests teach you get duplicated in the manuals each of the car tuning options had a swathe of text explaining them as well. Plus you got text for every car saying something about it and often the history of the manufacturer too.

Sorry I like third person action games, anon. Just play on the hardest difficulty like any Sony 1st party game and it's fun.

I've been playing Rage Racer for the first time since I wondered why Type 4 is the most talked about but not Rage itself. And oh my fucking god what are these physics, handling, and dogshit hitboxes. Granted I know it was made for that fucking Namco controller, but all the questionable design choices keep hammering inside my head despite trying to give it a chance.
At least the soundtrack is banging and the Assoluto Fatalita is pure sex.
>>736391982
Already finished my playthroughs with both Sega Rally 2 Arade editions.

Should I try Burnout Dominator? Revenge left me disappointed with how inferior it was compared to 3.

The only wonky part of rage is the drifting which nobody seems to ever nail down. The hitboxes behave just like the first two games but the big difference is the tracks are considerably narrower so the player needs to be much more careful and precise with their pacing to ensure they reach the top finishing cars at a point on the track when passing is sensible. I do hate that hump in the extreme oval though.

there are fuckloads of games with custom liveries, did you just wake up from a 30 year coma or something?

sex with reiko 4, reiko 5, and reiko 2, in that order
