This is a much more tense game than the remake for the simple reason that retreating from enemies means losing your sight on them and not knowing how close they are to you.

Yeah, which is why you don't retreat and you stick to one corner and destroy everyone with your abundance of ammo, pulling out your shotgun for its ridiculous crowd control if you get overwhelmed. The remake pressures you to stay on the move because enemies are more aggressive and harder to crowd control. Novistadors are a lot more dangerous in the original though.

They're about the same. No idea why remakefags insist it's substantially harder. For every thing the remake does to make it harder it also comes with something that makes it easier.
For example, takes more shots to stun an enemy with a pistol, but you have far greater movement capability.

Professional in the original mainly just changes numbers around, and getting hit is pretty punishing. But the remake goes beyond just changing damage values and makes it harder to stagger and set up melee, limits parries to perfect parries, and no autosaves so you lose more progress and are discouraged from reload scumming if you mess up too much. I think the original professional is more on par with hardcore.

It's like comparing sportspeople of different eras -- it's never a fair comparison. RE4 changed the TPS genre; whereas, RE4R will change nothing (even if it is easily the best of the RE Engine era RE games). However, the old game really isn't replayable on merit--compared to just for nostalgia purposes. RE4R, on the other hand, and until RE5R is released (assuming co-op functionality), really is the go-to RE game for objective fans.
