It's prescriptive, not descriptive, which is the biggest sign it's bullshit. And it leads to dumb preconceptions like the fact that games need to be gamey to be valuable, or that a game with more interactivity are better than the ones with less interactivity. It is a strength of the medium and it's wise to use it, but it's not an end-all be-all. I kinda see it as prose in books, it's usually better when it's good, a book with bad prose IS usually kinda shit, but it's not the only thing that matters, and books with bad prose can be masterpieces. Saying it's the only thing that matters is too restrictive for the medium.It would be better if video games were called "interactive fiction" or "computer fiction" instead, it's more soulless but at least people wouldn't get hung up on words.As for VNs in particular, they're definitely on the border between games and books and so they're naturally weird for both mediums, but it doesn't mean they're not games. I think you could argue for them being both at the same time, but if not, I think they're more games, the way they're structured is really different from normal books. Anybody who read both a book and a VN at the same time could tell you they have a ton of differences.Also, while we're at it, movie games aren't inherently bad either, but I kinda personally mildly dislike film as a medium so I don't play a lot of them and can't comment on whether they're shit or not and why.
