>>736403208Yes, and some visual novels are games. There are also Choose Your Own Adventure paper novels, which are games.
>>736402186GroundedIt basically perfected the survival genre. Huge hand curated map to explore. Great building mechanics with a sense of progression. QoL features to streamline a lot of tedium that others have, including storage management. There's a strong sense of exploration, and poking around is usually pretty rewarding.About my only complaint is that the food/smoothie system is kind of basic and forces you to eat a little too often and combat is extremely slanted toward perfect parrying everything since its so much more optimal than anything else.
>>736403282no, there is no gameplay.
>>736403536The gameplay is reading, analyzing, and making a choice. It's no different from a strategy game save that there's a lower density of choices made by the player.

>>736402186My favorite video game is Terraria because it's the best video game ever made.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 because it's fun
>>736402186Recently I've been really enjoying PSX style low poly platformers. Pseudoregalia, Big Catch, and Valkyrie Saga were all really really fun. I hope people continue to make them, because they really feel like the most promising area of videogames right now. I think it's something to do with being able to make things at really large scale and with a really compelling visual design without it being too time consuming to produce. Plus I think game design as it relates to platformers is much more sophisticated and advanced right now than game design in many other genres.

>>736404291Which is not a visual novel. Regardless, as >>736402972 argued, picking from a menu is technically a game. Anything with choices, actors, and outcomes is a game. In a less formal sense people may only think of extended, entertaining interactions with choices as games, but VNs certainly qualify there.

>>736402186I can't really pick one game so I'll list a couple>SekiroThe best From game imo and it isn't too hard, has a great story. Doesn't try to hard, it is a nice fun game.>FactorioPerfect gameplay loop with actual stakes and has procedural world gen. I love these factory games and would love to put Satisfactory on the list but the maps is basic and the stakes are zero.>Disco elysiumExcellent UI and storytelling, I understand the balkanised states much more. I don't care about the commie stuff and the ending was so good because I just didn't expect it. I thought I was doing some pointless side quest for half the game and it ended up all looping together.Feel free to judge me but those are the games I like. There are more games I like but those would be top 3.Honourable mentions>Rainworld>Noita>CK2>Dwarf Fortress

>>736404425That's pretty unique. But no, I'm mostly referring to this part here>Young Cloud>...I know. I'm the one that was stupid.>I really wanted to play with everyone, but I was never allowed into the group.>Then later... I began to think I was different...>That I was different from those immature kids.>That then... maybe...>Just maybe, they would invite me in.I thought that might happen, so I hung around...>Young Cloud>I was so prejudiced. And... weak.Cloud's motivation to join SOLDIER was to be strong. Because he felt at fault for Tifa falling off the bridge after her mom died. Thanks Tifa's dad. He was hoping that if he became a world class hero then maybe he could earn Tifa's notice. The problem is inadequacy. Cloud has always felt like he wasn't enough. And when he returned home as a grunt, those feelings were confirmed. He washed out and he never made it. But those were standards he set for himself. Tifa never asked for that, she just wanted someone to be there for her when she needed it most. Cloud killed Sephiroth. No one else on the planet can claim that. But Cloud only ever zeros in on his failures even though, ironically, literally everyone else believes in his ability including Sephiroth. Once Cloud gets over his self hatred, he's able to do fucking anything even if he's really awkward at it. I personally never got over my own self hatred unfortunately. And I still fail a lot. But Cloud's story gives me hope that maybe I can break that streak.

>>736405173>Everyone knows why these games are liked, instead I am trying to figure out what they have in common that makes me love them so much. The genuine, unironic answer to this is soul. The games you've picked out are passion projects with deep specificity. I have a similar taste (I think, based on what you've described) and here's the example I always use for myself:>In Dark Souls 1 lightning attacks create a tiny splash effect when used in waterNo design-by-committee game would ever have this in it because it's so specific and irrelevant to the overall product. Someone at Fromsoft just said 'hey lightning would splash in water right?' so they coded it in and gave it a visual effect. It has no material effect on progressing through the game because water is itself so sparse. There's exactly one boss that makes productive use of it as a danger element but that boss is in the DLC so it's clearly not what the feature was originally designed around. To cut to the chase, it is precisely because this detail doesn't matter, that its inclusion becomes a sign of soul. It shows that the priority during development, before anything else, was to make something fun as opposed to 'best-selling'.

>>736408136>anything with a win condition is a game. That's almost it, but it fails monumentally if you just apply it.For example: I've placed a win condition.>...on what?I'm not telling.>Where is it?Not telling.>Am I even playing the game in the first place? Not telling.ARE you playing a game? And then imagine that same scenario, except you aren't even aware the win condition existed in the first place. When are you playing the game (which you just lost) and when are you not playing it?
>>736409598Rule set + win condition + lose condition = game
>>736402568Jesus Christ where do I start with this
>>736405173I've been on this quest too recently. For me, it was just the sense of adventure. Of seeing mysterious things and new happenings, while advancing a goal, preferably a simple one of killing the Demon King or something along those lines (though the middle bits are allowed to be very complicated and philosophical). Everything else just doesn't do it for me as much. Guess I'm just a 90s action-adventure kid all gwown up.For reference+thread, favorite games are:EarthBoundZelda: All of them, but especially Skyward Sword fite me unironicallyShin Megami Tensei 4 + 5Castlevania Symphony of the NightPokémon Silver

>>736405053>yeah i definitely played those games >you see i am expert at jap mythology
>>736409617>+ lose conditionYou don't need a lose condition either actually. Or, more precisely the "lose" condition of a game isn't what you think it is, so you don't actually need to put one in.The only elements you need for any game:1. Competition/Challenge between two or more parties (in the event of a single player game, it's player vs. Dungeon Master's scenario)2. A win condition.3. Obstacles that obstruct the win condition or limit the player's ability to achieve it (i.e. a rule set).

I love RPGs where you make your party at a tavern, I love the sense of adventure the game has, the music is fantastic, it's just great, man.
>>736409869you misunderstand me. I was only saying you can't do free roam bank robberies. As far as I know that's not really a thing in GTA online and I definitely do not remember than in GTA4. Always behind setups/missionsI was just mentioning the melee and extortion systems in godfather because they were fun, not saying you couldn't beat people up in GTA bro like what. I love GTA

>>736402186The Finals quickly shot up to being my favorite game. Massively high skill ceiling where basically anything works and anything can happen. It's great seeing a developer actually try something new in the shooter space, both in terms of game design and in pushing technology forward (with those things then compounding each other), and I love that it's found a consistent playerbase, despite being a very punishing game, and one where going completely nuts with the stupidest shit can be the game plan over traditional avenues of just being the best at getting kills and what not (further frustrating the sweats)
>>736402186Starsector. It's just the right amount of autistic for me in terms of combat and resource management, and there's several hundred mods that I can mix and match to make every single playthrough completely different from the last. It's also the perfect example of making a good product that people want to buy will always beat out layer upon layer of anti-piracy integration in terms of combating piracy.>lead dev not making much money from the game>considering getting a second job so he can pay his other devs>a certain black jew eceleb makes video on it>video includes his CD key so people can get the complete game for free>so many people go to buy the game it crashes the site>twice>lead dev makes so much money in that one week he never has to work againYeah the modding scene is full of fart-huffing trannies, but what modding scene isn't?

So they actually feel labyrinthian There's 26 classes in total with a shitton of stat adjustment and skills so builds can be as complex or as simple as you wantIt has the best ludonarrtive harmony I have ever seen tying it together seemlessly. My only gripe with it is that nis pulled funding at the halfway point and it shows
