MGS2 felt more linear than MGS1 and 3.
Mentally I just think "defuse fatman's bombs, cross the struts and fight helicopter, do the second shell which is nikita, emma, and vamp and you're in the final area now"
Maybe the backtracking in 1 or the jungle in 3 makes it feel more varied
