The scholars of /vr/ have been calling it better than SOTN
>>
>>736403331
It definitely has more SOUL than Symphony. A true next gen Castlevania
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kekitaCO6Wk
>>
must be true then

Atmospheric, adventure, kino.
>>
Not a great game, but I enjoyed it anyway. It's most fun to play as Carrie, but Reinhardt's story is more interesting.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AV0offq9Xs
>>
>>736403331
It's not, but it's better than the critical reception it got
>>
This game is fine, I played it 5 times in a row (64 both characters/Legacy of Darkness all 3 characters) and then did Henry's bit too and I enjoyed myself well enough
>>
>>736403331
I never played Legacy of Darkness but watched clips and shit here and there, is it literally the same game? Apparently it has 4 playable characters but is the story different?
>>
They play so differently that comparing them is retarded, but I like both. The platforming and camera are still frustrating in 64 though.
>but you can adjust and get used to them
Yes you certainly can and I was much better at it after a few hours in, but it's still pretty cumbersome and annoying.

i think you would have to mentally deranged to think such a thing
>>
>>736403917
James really ruined that game's reputation. I remember enjoying Legacy of Darkness.
>>
I mean, I like it more 'cuz it's hard and SOTN is easy, but on what grounds do you filthy casuals prefer it?
>>
>>736403941
Legacy of Darkness is a weird mixture between an expansion pack and a sequel. There's a lot more to it and you can play through the campaigns of the 64 characters - but you need to beat it with the new characters first to unlock them.

>>736403991
Anyone who takes AVGN seriously is a complete fucking retard.
>>
>>736403941
Legacy of Darkness is basically an updated version released the same year. It improves the gameplay and camera and adds the two characters cut from 64. I wish it didn't remove the unlockable Castlevania 2 costume though.
>>
>>736403941
Some levels are reworked to be totally different like that lava map with the tower and unimplemented grapple points everywhere but it is basically the same game yeah. You have to play as the new character first and he has a wolf form and some new content/his own story and I remember him being pretty easy to play but having a more difficult dracula fight.
Then you unlock the characters from 64 again and their stories are the same but you'll be playing slightly altered routes and stages.
Then there's Henry mode and Henry has a gun and its basically like HUNK mode in RE2
>>
>>736403331
SOTN inspired an entire genre of clones that still going strong to this day. Can you name a single game that took inspiration from Castlevania 64?
>>
>>736403991
>Fucking Tacoman of all people beat the game
James is genuinely dogshit at video games and I wouldn't be surprised if all the clips of him finishing hard-as-shit games like Ghosts n Goblins were other peoples' footage
>>
>>736404114
They genuinely don't make 3D adventure games like CV64 anymore. They fell out of fashion because the masses can't handle freedom.
>>
>>736404156
Mike helped out a lot.
>>
>>736404114
dark souls
>>
>>736404246
honestly if you play Elden Ring correctly and utilize your jump you could compare it to CV64 unironically
>>
>>736404103
got the order wrong. Cornell unlocks Henry, and then playing Henry unlocks Carrie and Reinhardt if he finds enough kids.
>>
>>736404114
Being unique > Being surpassed.
>>
>>736403564
Holy fucking kino
>>
>>736404114
>Can you name a single game that took inspiration from Castlevania 64?
Castlevania Legacy of Darkness
>>
>>736404114
Metroidvanias are the easiest type of game to make. You don't need good level designs or obstacles, just hallways of copypasted easy enemies.
>>
Konami had some real underrated classics with mystical ninja and castlevania.
I wouldn't call 64 better than sotn though
>>
>>736404313
My mistake, I didn't remember playing him first, I do remember that they changed Reinhartd's jump so he no longer leaps like Mario which is a pretty lame choice and makes his new jump look awkward
>>
>>736403331
Yeah, /vr/'s been a hotbed for obnoxious, posturing fag lords for a while now. Nice board while it lasted.
>>
>>736403991
It had a bad reputation long before Youtube existed at all.
>>
>>736403986
>HIS CAPE HAS A TON OF FRAMES AAAAAA!!!!!!!
The game looks good but I assume people only like it because it's easy as piss

Hope one day this game can get a recomp on PC
>>
>>736403331
well, 64 has Carrie getting Drac'd, and LoD has Cornell spend the entire game on his quest to bang his sister, so i can kind of see why they like it.
Oh, Reinhardt tries to fuck a corpse too.
>>
>>736404012
>I like it more 'cuz it's hard
It isn't. I suppose the jumping puzzles might take a little getting used to, but Reinhardt's whip shreds everything, and Carrie can simply run away from the bad guys while firing homing missiles. The bosses are lumbering and slow and telegraph everything they do, and there's no shortage of healing items.
>>
>>736404817
Nobody dies from combat in 64, it's entirely the countless easy falling deaths.
>>
>>736403564
That lightning strike in the first level is the most memorable intro to a game that I've ever seen desu.
>>
>>736404817
>People complained that it was too hard back in the day
>People now complain that it's too easy
Journos have always been bad at games
>>
>>736403991
Nah, people shat on CV64 since the game came out, all James did was repeat what others said about the game.
>>
>>736403331
The garden maze scared the shit out of me as a kid. The Lost Woods Moblins in Ocarina also terrified me.
>>
>>736405254
Nobody else was quite on Bimmy's level of retardation when it comes to the nitro part.
>>
>>736405284
only thing i really hated about LoD was that they nerfed The Gardener. dude was legit scary in 64.
>>
>>736404817
It's super-duper hard with instant death jumps everywhere and cheap hazards knocking you down. And you get punished for over-buying healing items. Can you name a harder game on the N64 or are you just full of hot air?
>>
>>736405246
I never claimed it was too easy, I said it wasn't hard. There's almost no such thing as a difficult single-player video game; they are designed to be beaten. Kids not ten years old were able to beat the N64 Castlevania games. The people who are egotistical about clearing "difficult" video games or being "good" at single-player games are completely ridiculous.
>>
>>736405181
For me™ it's the gate slowly opening to reveal the huge skeleton as the music suddenly swells.

>There's almost no such thing as a difficult single-player video game
Beat "I Wanna Be The Guy" right this fucking instant.

that font alone has more soul than most modern games
>>
>>736406197
I like Carrie's story because she's supposed to be like a descendant of Maria Renard or something
>>
>>736403331
Well Symphony's a total fucking mess so it's not a super hard sell to say any Castlevania is above it.
Castlevania 64 is a funny hill to die on, though.
>>
>>736406629
I think they're both descendants of Sypha
>>
>>736403331
Yet another reason not to listen to /vr/.,

Symphony of the Night is overrated and has been a plague on the formula of Castlevania since then with each major release trying to copy it's lightning in a bottle essence
Legacy of Dankness at least tried something new and for that I like it more

'Tis simply a case of a mentally unwell tendie revisionism. Pay it no mind.

It's become recently popular to shit on it and pretend the actual dogshit games in the series are good. Just par for the course contrarian faggotry.

i have yet to beat the game as reinhardt. i'm currently on my second carrie run in 64 because i forgot to get the pink outfit. i had to beat cornell's story twice, because i forgot to save my game in my entire playthrough to play as henry.

villa (legacy of darkness). and tower of science (legacy of darkness). that tower it had the most variety of one the liniar stages.
>>
>>736403917
The journalists back then actually gave it good reviews! It was the gamers that went full retard for SotN and hated CV64. I say this as someone who has been a CV fan since 2013 but due to the awful reputation of CV64 I only played it the first time in 2023. And I got surprised because it's the best 3D game and actually feels like Castlevania, Lament/Curse/LoS are garbage
>>
>>736403331
SotN is good, but incredibly overrated when you consider how Aria and the DS games surpassed it by a lot.
