Star Fox 64 was interesting precisely because the plot wasn't very well developed and it left a lot for you to wonder on your own about the galaxy.
For example, we never see what Zoness looked like before getting turned into an ocean of sludge, but we don't really need to.

Assault isn't perfect but it's the only Star Fox game after 64 that you can really call an acceptable sequel. It also has the story tone and voice direction they should've continued with going forward.

Zero is borderline great, actually. It's just a shame the controls are cumbersome, and they decided we needed gyro copter stages.

The voice direction is also terrible in Assualt. It sounds like no one is trying, compared to how lively and expressive every line in 64 is.

I don't even know what this is. I assume it's from Star Fox Assault, in which case I never got past the first on-foot mission because it was so anti-fun I couldn't stand it, especially with how absolutely mediocre the flying missions were to begin with.

Assault's biggest fault story and tone-wise is that the Aparoids don't talk, so the good guys have no villains to play off of. Compare that to the hammy bad guys from 64 and even Zero.

I thought the villain NOT being Andross but a space locusts is a nice touch. You can't negotiate with them, it force you to team up with the villain, and there were sacrifices or fighting your allies in parts of the story.

It's more interesting that it merely exists and allows you to imagine what and why. All the shit in the game is cool because it needs no explanation. You get just enough info that it makes the gears turn in your head. This is the same "fill in the gaps" effect that you see with low-res/low-poly graphics and low-quality/limited-sound channel music.
Star Fox doesn't need "fleshing out" of anything. All it needs is more stuff that exists just because it does. Someone thought "wow, this would make a cool idea for a level" and did the bare minimum to justify why it's there, and that is more powerful than any hours-long Youtube video essay that tries to analyze every single pixel and every individual byte of the game looking for meaning that isn't there.

Dunno, I thought the Aparoids were mega-cringe; between the multiplayer focus and all the actual deaths in the game (mainly Peppy suicide-bombing with the Great Fox, something I thought was triple-cringe), I felt like SF was trying to switch to a different fanbase out of nowhere, like they wanted to become more SERIOUS and MANLY or something.
I'm sure that has nothing to do with Halo 1 exploding the vidya market roughly 5 years prior and Halo 2 double-exploding the market a year before Assault, and Adventures being rated poorly probably made them think "man, they must not like kiddy stuff anymore!"

The whole thing smelled super off to me, and I really disliked it. Assault is still my least favorite of the SF games I've played. Heck, I even liked Adventures as soon as I mentally wrote the game off as a Zelda game.

No the furries are the ones who hated assault. They hated assault and praised command because command damn near irrepairable to Krystal's character. Furries are the ones who want to keep star fox at 64 and only there.

Assault was boring for game design reasons and weird monologues or moments between stages of characters chattering away in very weird melodramatic methods. It wanted to saturday morning space opera anime and a lot of fans bounced off of that. Personally I just thought the gameplay wasn't very good and mission design was boring as dogwater on top of more boring aesthetic art choices. But Assault was fine enough and anyone can still hop into it versus the retardation that was Zero.
