It's never coming out, is it

It's coming out this spring allegedly. A demo was playable at PAX East.

At the Yacht Club panel they mentioned one of the main reasons for the delay was that the game world's regions were developed in a segmented manner, and that when they put everything together there wasn't good flow between them. Another reason was that the game's RPG mechanics needing more tuning to account for being able to go through the regions in any order with almost any arrangement of items.

sounds extremely worrisome. you will likely unlock movement abilities forcing you to go back and get collectibles/more items, making it an open world metroidvania. sounds annoying.

This, I fucking hate non-linear structures nowadays.

I'm sure there will be some extent of cross-area backtracking if you want to get 100% completion, that's just standard fare for top down Zelda-type games. They did make a point of advertising that there js an achievement for doing a "negative percent run" where not only do you collect as few items as possible, but you actually sell your starting items/health bar/etc., so the game must be at least technically completable without needing certain mobility items. They did make a point of mentioning they wanted to avoid map design that was "hookshot-esque" in the sense of progression in the world being gatekept by movement items.

It will, but it's not going to make nearly what they need to keep them afloat.
