The first level has a good level of difficulty. Not too easy, not too hard. Then as the game goes on Ryu gets stronger weapons and more health, yet you fight weaker enemies. The zombie enemies are particularly bad.

>>736411015>single legitimate flawUnderground levels are bad. Military levels are bad. In general, almost all levels after you go underground are bad. Most of the bosses are shit. Forced camera lock on bosses, especially when they have minions, is shit. Most of the ambushes are bad, because instead of featuring unique encounters, they have you fight over a hundred of same enemies, 3 – 5 at the time. Difficulty progression on the higher difficulties is bad, in the first level you fight some of the most dangerous enemies in the game with nothing, after that the game throws easier enemies at you and you have more stuff to play with. It means that the first level is the hardest and it only gets easier from there on, because the game has nowhere to increase it’s difficulty further.
If you ask me, I think on a technical and gameplay level, Ninja Gaiden (until 3) was at a far more advanced level. It's much smoother and the flow of action is more intense. DMC1 is notoriously stiff and 3 is pretty similar to 1, all things considered. It's not until 4 that they come close to NG4's polish, but unfortunately 4 is wracked with so much fucking bullshit and bad enemy design that makes it look worse. But DMC5 definitely found that footing and evolved the foundation DMC was built upon astronomically and easily clears past NG games. Not even NG4 comes close, but we'll never know what an NG4 led by Itagaki would be like.

Where Ryu would ignore an enemy who's knocked down right in front of him and instead swing at somebody who's ready to block or dodge his attack. Or where enemies will dodge/block out of hitstun, for example, if you do XY, X will connect, but Y will get dodged/blocked. On higher difficulties, such things can cost you a lot of your health or even get you killed, and they are not exactly rare.
