Because they didn't exist for the first 30 years of modding, and I don't like change because I'm autistic.

Give me one rational reason why modders shouldn't pay the developers a cut of their mod sales

gta modding scene was free and it was glorious. I remember being 11, didnt speak a word of english, yet i managed to patch together a post on gtaforum to ask why my cleo mod wasnt working and the guy i stole the code from actually dropped in, took his time to read through my pile of broken english garbage to help me troubleshoot the whole thing

Generally speaking, aftermarket developers don't have to pay licensing fees or royalties to OEMs, regardless of industry.

jewish man's ideology*
>>
>>736413773
also why i never get into skyrim modding, it struck me as needlessly overcomplicated. with gta you just drag and drop whatever mode you want into the cleo folder. modding skins was even more straughtforward

Unc still goes to the store for his games

you wouldn't even comprehend the answer because you're a paypiggy buying iphones unimaginative uninspired derivatives of the original instead of completely alternative full products and games that should be supported.

Paid mods is a psyop to destroy modding.

Developers should not skim off my labor
>>

Unironically this.
Bethesda has been trying to destroy their mods for a while, because they view them as competition for their own games.
Which is true.
>>
>>736413581
That's what ended up happening with Microsoft Flight Simulator. Has an in-game addons store full of 3rd party crap that MS takes a cut of.
On PC you can still sell or give away addons/mods outside of that store, but for the Xbox and PS5 versions of MSFS you have to go through the in-game store.

Money shouldn't exist we should just share everything and be happy.

Competition is one thing but editors can't accept the fact that some people use their property as a platform to make money, undermining their own micro transaction. You just have to look capcom.

Some resident evil 3 remake costumes are $19 for a single costume. While the recolor for $8.99 doesn't sell.

This is why capcom awkwardly attacked modding, nothing to do with image.

Big Game doesn't want it because it could compete with their games for gamer money
>>
Because modding is like buying an already made footlong sandwich and cutting it in half and then charging for it
You didn't do shit when someone else did 99% of the work

Prices give an element of 'flavor' to a product. A free glass of water tastes better than a $1 glass of the same water, all due to the knowledge that you had just paid for said product. It's not something you can explain

Nobody said you can't charge for your services. You want your mods to be paid, sure, go right ahead. But unpaid mods, free softwares, community-based open software projects will always be on the winning side of history

This
Activates the parts of the human brain relegated to foraging, I think. I heard once, that phone notifications and checking your phone activate this part of the brain, too, but, I'm less sure about that. But, finding a steep discount or free thing, especially if it's something you had to look at least a little for, makes it good.
I'll get greater enjoyment out of very mediocre games on Steam than good ones, if I got that mediocre game for free/extremely discounted. If I pay 70 bucks, even for a great game, I look at it differently. If I play a 10 dollar game, marked down to 1.49, I'm much, much more forgiving of its flaws, and willing to see its pros.
Today, it was House Flipper.
Utterly mediocre job simulator game. But, it's free on Steam right now. 100% off. So it hits different. As a game you pay money for, I don't know how I'd feel about it. As a game that's free, and not just free, but free because I found it, at an unusual time and place, it feels way more satisfying.
Maybe that's valid and justified, maybe that's delusional. Either way, doesn't change that I've enjoyed my evening of House Flipper more than any full price game I've bought in the last year. Will I play House Flipper tomorrow? Maybe. Maybe not. Time will tell. But even if I don't, even if it is literally for one evening, it's felt good.
Funny horror mushroom game was free, too. Haven't tried that yet. Probably that tomorrow.

>because they view them as competition for their own games.
they view mods as free ideas to take for themselves. build mode for fallout 4 was ripped off from rts mod for 3 that came out in 2010.

The main reason is just that people don't want to spend money on add ons that could potentially stop being updated or otherwise become unusable due to being unsupported.
The other reason is that some devs find the idea of someone taking their product, editing it, and then reselling what they believe to be their work to be bullshit.
Personally I just don't trust them to be worth the money, so I don't buy them.
