>removing ray tracing makes the game less blurry and improves performance
whats the point?
>>
I mean, you bought it
>>
>>736425987
>whats the point?
it sounds great to a room full of potential investors
>>
>>736425987
I forgot about this game. I wanna try it sometime just to see if it pushes my hardware.
>>
I watched the talk on how they did their global illumination system for doom dark ages.
The guy seemed really on point like a proper id software engineer should be and throwing numbers around "bla bla cascasing shadows and we only compute those in the view frustrum and do a radius from the camera to set sub division details etc etc", "in turn we can run the ligthing pass in 2miliseconds"
then you play the actual game and you barely get 100fps on a 1000 dollar gpu
either the artists are botching everything or the dude and his team fucking lied
>>
>>736425987
But you will miss out on reflections in puddles and water droplets! Turn it back right now, antiNvidia scum!
>>
I'm more pissed about the upscaling being a fucking piece of jank in pretty much every game I've tried.
Such bullshit. Modern devs should be flogged publicly for that crap.

screenshots mostly there is a case for using ray tracing as a gameplay element but that would restrict your player pool. Ray tracing is alot like VR
>Futuristic sounding feature
>games that do it well can be counted on 1 hand
>john carmack was fucking with it long before anyone else
Seriously how the fuck did this space alien in human get real time reflections(not exactly ray tracing but same thing its trying to do) in 2001. Towers were falling and he said fuck it lets flex on every game out there and have real mirrors in our game. You could legit no clip through the mirrors in the game and see nothing behind them no dev tricks to simulate a mirror.
(7:20 for an example of real time reflections)

AMD problems be like
>>
>>736426663
I piss on AMD but I don't blame this one on them, bro's got a nVidia, it's also janky.
>>
>>736426224
It doesn't look that great to justify relatively heavy performance.
It has volumetric fog everywhere and looks muddy in general.
It also defaults to transformer based dlss, so if you're on nvidia and using dlss it's a good choice to force the regular version to avoid huge performance hit.
This is a game what is Nvidia's sponsoring/lobbying victim. Can't see it as anything else.

It would seem doom's lightning has taken a tumble since 2001
>>
>>736426628
Then no wonder upscaling looks like shit.
You should instead use DLAA/FSR Native AA, otherwise games will look like shit, even TAA is unusable at FHD.

Devs are shilling memetracing not because it "looks better" but because theyre lazy niggers who want lighting automated instead of needing to put in the effort of crafting it themselves. Even if it means the end user needs to drop 2 grand for a card and have the game run at half performance
>>
>>736425987
I will pirate it just to use it as a benchmark.
For a title with forced RT the performance isn't awful.
Random UE5 garbage with lumen and nanite will perform much worse.
>>
>>736425987
fake crap
cant turn off ray tracing in doom dark ages since there is no fallback solution, if you turn it off the screen goes black

>>736426978
i hate how they thought a 4 day final bake for all maps is worth having the game run 5x worse
instead they could have just built a bigger render farm that would bake it in a hour or two and stick to lightprobes and light maps

especially since doom dark ages is static, since denosiing is so slow its basically prebaked and very low sample since even with thousands of samples per frame its just an ugly blurry mess that dosnt catch any details and they have to use screen space shadows and AO to fill it in
>>
>>736426595
what a waste of time
you can just do this in blender if you really want to

>>736426890
doesn't change his point that upscaling has more flaws, even at 1440p, than classic AA like msaa if it's done properly
HL Alyx exists and it proves it can be done in a modern game and look good even on a 1080p screen (sharp, no aa motion blur, minimal shimmer)
>>
>>736429227
It means developers can replicate their vision much easier instead of doing hack jobs that get only close enough.
>>
>>736435358
It's a VR game, majority of games are made for cucksoles, to be played on a large screen further from the player.
If you got the same experience in VR as on console you would puke your guts after a minute.
All the smearing effects are in place because those make development of games easier/cheaper.
There is no other game like HL Alyx, that should tell you something. You just saw an unicorn. Things will only get worse from now on.

>No more lightning for a mere 14fps gain
It's impressive that they got RT to run this fast even on an AMD gpu. Are you sure that's all off?

TDA is disappointing but IDTech still slaps

You can't remove RT from Doom the dark ages, dumbass. It literally has no other lighting system.

ultra nightmare settings (RT included) 4k, FSR4 quality, 60fps
it must suck being a brown poor lol
>>
>>736426226
1000 dollars is a midrange card these days. You can play minesweeper with that maybe. And this isn't 1999, you don't play games at 250 frames per second like Quake or something. You are truly blessed if you can get 60.
>>
>>736425987
the trifecta amd, microshit and nvidia actually work closely together which means they can easily manipulate you into consuming a shittier product and making sure you will upgrade your hardware in the future to account for their "errors"
>>
>>736439062
cute.
a GTX 1060 could play DOOM at native 1440p maxed out at 90+ FPS

a $70 card with 3 GB vram.

It's kinda funny how the reflection in this video genuinely looks better than most raytraced games.
Reminds me of nu-Hitman 2, which accomplished something similar without raytracing as well.
>>

kek

>1000 dollars is a midrange card
Absolutely not. Check the steam stats and see the amount of people with cards better than a 4080/5070ti
>>
>>736426890
It's crazy but this is true. I have a 1080p ultrawide 144hz monitor that I've had for over ten years now. The image quality of the panel is great.
Running the games in 1440p with virtual super resolution makes games look SO MUCH better, even when seen through a 1080p monitor.
It's clear that games since the last 5 games are made with 1440p or higher in mind.
Running the game at 1440p with upscaling looks much better than 1080p native, it's gross as fuck.
>>
>>736440452
nothing to do with popularity thoughbeit
5070 ti / 9070 xt is a midrange card that offers 1440p 60fps in late 2024 games
5080 is high end and 5090 is the premium tier
>>
>>736440547
>Running the game at 1440p with upscaling looks much better than 1080p native
1440p upscaling quality is like 960p mate
>>
>>736440931
1440p in the highest quality level looks better than with no upscaling still. Internal resolution is 1200px tall or so. These games are cooked blurry as shit.
>>
>>736425987
I only have it on my ps5 how would I turn ray tracing off if I get the steam version?
>>
>>736438261
Some redditor ran it on 1660 Ti and forced it to work without RT. It doesn't have global illumination, but other light sources like torches and explosions still work.

>>736440810
my 3060ti begs to differ
>>
>>736440017
Render-to-Texture is an ancient technique that can have great payoffs if you optimize and use it right, and the average person wouldn't even realize it. At least, that's what I presume some reflections like those use. Modders can do it in the goddamn Halo 2 engine.
