The disconnect doesn't bother me the way it used to.If Trigger is the classic Square formula streamlined and polished to a sheen with no fluff Cross is like, their late 90s jrpg formula taken to a maximalist approach. It embraces everything about the genre, from the party mechanics to the heavyhanded storytelling, and dials it to 11. It's not as a good a game as Trigger for it, and doing the opposite of everything that your predacessor successful is a baffling way to make a sequel, but at least it's interesting. Its own story is a closed circle that retcons its events out of the timeline anyway so sure, let Schala have multidimensional clones that look and act nothing like her and populate the world with reptite dragon gods, who cares at that point.
