I can kind of see Astrobot being in Smash but he needs an appearance on a Nintendo console first like with Cloud and Joker.

There needs to be some balance to the importance of those characters for a crossover to work. Smash is a bit different since it's an ensemble cast. Sony doesn't have anyone on the level of a 1st party Nintendo character. To pretend Sackboy (lol) or Astrobot can stand next to Mario is delusional. Sackboys only good game just stole from Galaxy and Sunshine anyway.

At that point SEGA were already out of the console race and had released several titles for Nintendo's consoles. Even though there have been a small handful of Sony releases on Nintendo systems, they are still competing.
