What's the /v/erdict on this console shooter from 2006 that turned 20 years old this year? From what I remember as a kid, it had fantastic sound design. The guns and explosions were thunderous. Gunplay was also good due to the heavy recoil and the guns all feeling distinctive. The graphics were also pretty good.

just waiting for PC decom/recomp
>>

>PC decom/recomp
Are these like unofficial ports that run on PC natively and not via an emulator? How hard is it do something like that? I'm not too familiar with this scene
>>
>>736446074
great for its time, but way too many issues to be considered classic
for a "gun porn" game there were too many frankenguns, inaccuracies (RoF, ridiculous magazine sizes), enemies being bullet sponges and lack of ads, only zoom in function, which is the worst option between ads and no ads, also story sucked, we didn't get action B movie, but a bulgarian production straight-to-dvd movie
>>
>>736446637
yeah but you need to create tools for it and there's a lot of work to be done. it might actually never happen if no one's motivated enough to do it.
>>
>>736446915
I think they deliberately took creative liberties with the gun designs. They also took liberties in favor gameplay balancing (the magazine sizes, rate of fire etc.). I don't remember anything about the plot, other than it was enough to keep me going through the game.

>>736447198
Since it's that hard, I'm going to assume that only absolutely beloved games get one of these ports or games that for some reason just cannot be emulated well enough. I don't think Black falls under any of those categories.
>>
>>736446915
>frankenguns
>bullet sponges
Hallmarks of early '00s shooters.
>>
>>736446074
this game's remington shotgun and the magnum gunshot sounds are still pure sex to hear to this day
>>
>>736446074
All I know is that playing with the 60 fps hack on the PS2 version made the sniper-opening level impossible, AFAIK, until he just didn't shoot. Never got Mouse Injector working on it.
Also, actual widescreen cheats for this game are better than the native widescreen mode, as the one it uses is just vertical-.

It's criminal that this game never got a remastered port for newer consoles and PC.
The game was also ported to the OG Xbox, which means it already has native x86 sources around. How hard could it be?

Yes
>How hard is it do something like that? I'm not too familiar with this scene
Probably pretty hard, considering how little of these exist
>>
>>736447923
The 60 fps patch doesn't work properly. You must play the game with 30 fps as far as i know
>>
>>736446074
It was alright for the time but it's painful to play in the modern era. Aiming with an analog stick is terrible especially during this early era and the game is all grey palette wise not too different from the piss yellow military shooters of the 7th gen.
>>
The building explosions were pretty neat. I remember playing this mission outside a factory and blowing up one of these cylinder buildings to smithereens.
I'm sure if i played it now it would be a lot less cool than I remembered.
>>
>>736446915
>>736447692
The game was developed by Criterion and allegedly supposed to be "the Burnout of the FPS genre". Realism obviously was never one of the top priorities.
>>
>>736446074
goated console shooter, only midwits would call it a bad game
>>
>>736448068
>the game is all grey palette wise not too different from the piss yellow military shooters of the 7th gen.
Why is this a problem? The game's visual director was obviously going for this grey, grimy, lifeless, industrial aesthetic. It fits the plot and world of the game. This reminds me of when Call of Duty players always complain when a COD game doesn't have any color. When Modern Warfare 2019 came out, COD fans were complaining about how there were no bright reds, yellows, blues like the Treyarch Black Ops games. Yeah, that was what they were going for.

>>736448134
maybe, but I was in awe how detailed the guns were in trailer, so I expected the same for full game

like just give me the stock G36C nigga, CoD4 did it year after and it was cool
>>
>>736446074
I remember tons of people sucking it off back in the day but I never played it.
Tried emulating it a few years back but it didn’t grab me at all.
>>
>>736448016
I had no issues until there.
>>
>>736446074
Great game, awesome visual and sound design. Just a good time all around if you like shooters.
>>
>>736446074
Despite it being a 6th gen game, Black is much closer to a proper 7th gen shooter than most of the actual early 7th gen shooters like Resistance Fall of Man or MoH Airborne
>>
>>736447937
How much better is the Xbox version compared to the PS2 version?
>>
>>736446915
The game should have had taken more risks with designing replayability. Its a single player only with a barebones story. You got some standard enemies and quite some weapons. The level design is good, the missions are varied but it should have had some changes in each difficulty playthrough. The side objectives are just collectibles, doesnt change enough. It should have different enemy layouts and even weapons switched around.
Plus take hints from racing games, with a score attack mode and even smaller arcade setpieces like in Bulletstorm

Are there any other older more "obscure" FPS games like Black that I might not have played? I'm tired of modern games.

Cold Winter
007 Nightfire (PS2 version, PC version sucks)
TimeSplitters, 2 is fine but Future Perfect is the best
No One Lives Forever 1+2
Project Snowblind
XII (do NOT play the remake, altough the updated version is playable)
Urban Chaos: Riot Response
Brothers in Arms, all 3 are good

This is the only game I've played out of the list. I also played Everything or Nothing. Thanks.

PS2 was the lead platform and it pushed it to the limit it was impossible to port to GameCube without rebuilding most of the game and wasn't worth it. EA was pretty good at supporting PS2 and mastering it
>>
>>736449227
Not much.
Xbox version has slightly better-looking textures, enhanced lighting in some areas (especially interiors) and better color grading, but it's not a night and day difference like in some other 6th gen multiplats.
Performance/framerate wise they're the same.
>>
Played it recently on PCSX2 with mouse and keyboard plugin
It took some tweaking but eventually got it to work well
That final level with the bunker was utterly insane and the penultimate level with the kino bridge was also intense and memorable
But my funnest time is after beating it I unlocked silver guns and just went full psycho fun mode
Good time

>>736446074
It was a great game. I liked how it was designed. I don't agree with the "bullet sponge" arguments.

One very bad oversight was giving you the infinite ammo unlock when you finish the game, and I would like to do the Black Ops difficulty without that...

If you wish, there is a mouse injector for the PS2 emulator.

https://github.com/garungorp/MouseInjectorDolphinDuck

It only works for the NTSC version, but I made the driver for the PAL version too.

In the file I included the source code (which you have to add to the v16 release), but if you don't know how to rebuild the .exe, I included that too.
After downloading the mouse injector, you have to just overwrite that .exe with mine.

It's one of those mid games that /v/ hypes up as a hidden gem that they cannot shut the fuck up about.
>>
>>736451440
Thanks for the great work, bro
>>
>>736453768
Oh, nothing special. It's pretty much a copy of the driver for the NTSC version with few changes. I wouldn't be able to make it from scratch.

Enjoy the game! As the mouse makes it much easier, I suggest to go directly on the hard difficulty.

Really great game for the ps2, graphically it was impressive and the reload dof blur was cool, it runs smooth too which is impressive, modern games run like crap even on modern hardware
