Everyone focuses on The Gnome Quest but damn reading some of the books in this game is really interesting. You actually have to walk through almost every major location featured in the game, then walk around the map to find even more distant altars, then you have to find out the specific order of rituals (you have to make 16 offerings in total, last one being your life), then you read the inscriptions on what offerings are there (and each altar has its own style and poetic rhythm), figure out what the symbols representing the gods are, then you deduce the order of offerings based on an ancient mystic saying. The only indicator that you're doing things right is that your blessings are accumulated instead of being canceled out. You circle through everything that is known to man, good, evil and things inbetween, and end up in the arms of the one All-Father. You can read actual Gnostic texts out there and they're less convoluted than this shit, but it could be representative of an actual spiritual journey, although abstracted and shortened.One other thing you can deduce from it is that the All-Father provides resistance to magic as well as a bonus to technology, and no other god offers anything related to magic. It's a fun thing to consider given that the creation of magic is not exactly natural. It has been brought to this world by a cataclysmic event and it's been sort of waning throughout history since the dragons and the giants are basically extinct. Gods are a part of the natural order in Arcanum, heralded by tech-proficient people of Vendigroth, who were ultimately destroyed by the Elves, an unnatural race with unnatural powers and unnatural religions sprouting out of it, both with Nasrudin and Arronax worship. Given time, however, it is possible that in hundreds of thousands of years Arcanum will be just like our real world but with the gods (and dwarves actually) present again.

Anyone else get this game running on Linux? I've recently swapped to it but this and the Sands of Time Trilogy are the only games that have given me trouble since the switch. GOG version of Arcanum if that helps.

I can't really be bothered with critical misses since it's the one part of Arcanum I don't like at all. I gotta try a playthrough with that "deal with the devil" background that ensures your karma never goes above -20, could be a fun playthrough to do good things with evil-only companions.

Because of the magick literally vibrating in their bones even still, elves, being the product of supernatural selection, have a lowered aptitude for technology, for example.

Fuck me... BG2 really does itself no favours does it? I finally got past chapter 2 and made my way to spell-hold. Then because I can't send my party back hone I have to ditch Imoen despite spending the whole game searching for her, then you have an utterly dogshit dungeon in the spellhold and a boss that I'm pretty sure I accidentally oneshot with haste, and now I have a whole fucking Sahagan questline to do before I can actually get home and swap in Imoen? Couldn't they have paced the story a little better? There's so much to do in chapter 2 but the moment you get on the ship you're railroaded so hard.
