I'm turning 30 and I've never been into video games. Can you help me find games to play? You can assume I'm starting from zero, because I am. No preferred genres, not many preconceptions about what a game should be like. I would prefer things that are older or that otherwise run on non-gaming hardware. PC games or emulated, freely available or cheap. I would prefer not to have to buy any hardware except maybe a controller. My only requirements:>The games respect my time. They don't have to be short but the time spent has to be well-spent.>The games aren't overstimulating. Nothing fast-paced or that requires good reflexes. I have that kind of autism.>The games reward engagement. Intellectual, creative, emotional, it doesn't matter. I just don't want to turn my brain off.Feel free to ask me questions or request more information. I thought about including a brief about me but I don't think any of my interests would tell you what kind of games I might like, aside from my preference for things to be slower-paced and not overstimulating.
Try Patapon 1, not as grindy as 2 or 3. Should serve as a nice introduction to gaming.
>I'm turning 30Unc is almost 30 and still post on this app
Leave while you still can. This is my only and final warning.

>>736462861Video games are normie.
>>736462653Honestly play fabled lands java. It's a free, open source text adventure game and will run on a potato. The only downside is that it's not very well known and like twenty years old so you won't find people talking about it on here.
I'm assuming you know how to use computers already, play a really old game like Duke Nukem 3D. It will help orient you to movement and navigation without hitting you with too much at once

>>736462653Skyrim. Get the anniversary edition for pc and disable the extra content if you can, so you can get a feel for the base game. Best race is orc. It's the game that made me love gaming in the first place

>>736462653You don't "have" to get into videogames. If you don't like them don't play them. If anything your posts sounds like you are trying to have them as a performative interest.
>>736463040I got the computer autism, not the video game autism. I was hanging out on /g/ and Lainchan. I'm just looking for something to fill the void since I'm finishing my CS master's and I'd be a shut-in if not for my job.

>>736463482If video games don't look appealing to you at a glance then they are probably not for you.You could always do with a hobby that doesn't involve looking at a screen too if you already spend the rest of your day doing exactly that.
>>736463596I didn't say they don't look appealing, I just don't know what to play. Finding new interests requires building context. I am asking for context.

>>736462653Try out cataclysm: dark days aheadZombie Apocalypse happens, and you have to survive by clearing out an area and building up a base. You feel me? if you're willing to try out something that _can_ get faster, I'd say try out melee at a local and see if slippi could work for you. Its online for an old smash game, but being fan made means it has the best experience anywhere and if you catch that bug it'll be all you need for a long time.

>>736462653FINAL FANTASY TACTICS. It fits all of your criteria and has a great story to boot. The remaster is fantastic, but emulating is also a totally valid choice.
>>736462653I've played over 300 games probably. There are only 3 or 4 games that you need to play I think before you can quit gaming forever and not miss much.1) VtMB with the unofficial patch2) The Witcher series. 1 and 2 might be too hard to get into so you could try skipping to 3, but 1 and 2 are excellent if you can get into them.Honourable mentions:Ghost of a TaleWhat Remains of Edith FinchThief Gold with TFixPortal 1 maybe 2TALOS PrincipleThere are a smattering of others, some other walking sims with transcendent moments that I won't mention here, but the ones I mentioned are pretty much the gold standard of narrative experiences.
>>736462653uh....Try Kingdom Hearts, maybe?Kingdom Hearts 1 sits in the middle of several genres. It's pretty casual/approachable action game, and has a lot of elements taken from JRPGsIf you like it you could go from that to everything from Zelda to Dark Souls to turn based JRPGs to western action RPGs to Metroidvanias etc. etc. and have a decent foundation for what to expect. On the other hand, Kingdom Hearts is pretty autistic so maybe starting with Kingdom Hearts isn't a good idea...
I like threads like these because the retard op gets other retards to self report that they actually don't like videogames

>>736465348>lame, just how slow are you? It can affect the games you should be recommended. It's mostly just that I get overstimulated easily. Happens with movies and TV shows, music, etc. and it happened when people tried to introduce me to certain video games growing up - mostly normie FPS shit. I guess it's not about pacing strictly speaking, but I do better with things that are chill and slow-paced.>You're making this really tough.Yeah, sorry. Those are the primary reasons I never got into gaming really. I'm sure there are plenty that meet those criteria, I just never knew where to look and never asked. >>736465673>I get overstimulated easily. What does that actually mean? Is it when you are presented with many challenges in quick succession and you need split second decisions to solve them, but you can't handle it? Give an example so I can understand.
I really think you should try Rollercoaster Tycoon. It's old, it's not a frantic action game, just build a theme park and draw paths and build rides. It's the kind of game you don't really have to know what you're doing and you can still do well, and you don't need to have any gaming knowledge at all to get started
>>736462653Nuclear throne. You just shoot dudes, that's all there is to it.
>>736466098My bad, I forget not everyone is retarded like I am. That's part of it, yeah. I would break it into three parts:- Slow thinking/decision paralysis/etc. like you mentioned- Literally being clumsy and uncoordinated and having poor fine motor control, making games that depend on those things more difficult for me. As an example, someone tried to get me into Rocket League in college, and I struggled with it.- Struggling with the sensory components: bright lights, too many/too loud of sounds, things like that. But I figure I can control those settings at least.

There’s decomp PC ports of Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask, Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, and Star Fox 64 all done by Harbour Masters, highly recommend checking those out if you’re interested in some of the best of the Nintendo 64.I also recommend getting the emulator SNES9X if you’re also interested in some of the best 2D games of all time:>Zelda A Link to the Past>Super Metroid>Chrono Trigger>Super Mario World>Yoshi’s Island>Super Mario All-Stars (compilation of Super Mario Bros. 1-3 + Lost Levels)>Mega Man X>Donkey Kong Country 1-3>Kirby Super Star>Final Fantasy 6 (called FF3 initially in the US)>Earthbound
>>736466424Cataclysm recommended here. Also try out Battle for Wesnoth. Community made top down where you play as little fantasy units through some stories. Surprisingly fun, though most people find the slower pace or older graphics off putting.I personally enjoy it, and there are plenty of fan made campaigns that add new stories, units, and even mechanics. And if you enjoy it thoroughly and want to contribute a computer background helps speed up the creation process.I hope you find a fun hobby. If gaming doesn't work out, there's a surprisingly deep overlap between comp-sci and hiking. Visiting a place over and over and picking up more knowledge about how water flows over and under the ground, figuring out how trees come up and eventually fall over, animal trails next to walls vs down to water sources vs on ridges. Its iterative in a way I enjoy
>>736466424War Thunder Air RB can provide slow, methodic energy fights. Most of the controls are taken care for you, and if you play correctly you don't need a good aim either. You can play in a way that gives you all the time you could need to make correct decisions (people will hate you for it in chat though).I still don't know how long it takes you to make decisions, so you may have trouble with 'Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman!' as it gives limited time for planning and decision making on each stage. I'm guessing you need games that are turn based. You can take it easy with Minesweeper.
