>autistically reading about HDR and trying to find the best settings for my monitor
>think I finally have a good setup
>turns out I have to fine-tune everything all over again for every single game
>and not every game even has proper HDR implementation, so I have to use mods and shit like Special K and RenoDX to fix it and even those tools have to be fine-tuned too
I’ve been trying to learn how to use these tools properly for hours, but the question still remains: is the way I tweaked my games actually how the developers intended them to look, or am I just deep-frying the game’s art?
This is silly.
This is stupid.
HDR makes no sense.
The only way any of this would make sense is if the developers were standing in my bedroom and I could ask them directly whether the way I tweaked the graphics is actually how the game is supposed to look.
>>
I just throw RenoDX on and don't bother fine tuning it any more. Fuck it. Pick a few settings that look good and that's enough for me. Yeah it is annoying though. SDR on am OLED Looks good anyway.
>>
Ever since I got a C5 I have come to resent HDR. I feel like people are just lying out their asses when they say it looks great. Also, hate how detailed blacks are now, really hate it.

I'm tired of so much shit being slapped on the screen just to sell more graphics cards/Monitors because they hit a dead end with power/resolution.
Im aware HDR is an old thing but I'm still mad

I was deep-frying the game's art way before getting an HDR display. I fundamentally do not respect devs and their "vision" or whatever. I also don't care about anyone's tastes other than mine.

Just do whatever the fuck you feel like, if it looks pretty to you then that's good enough

HDR is the biggest fucking scam in modern displays.
I hate how they keep marketing it as a thing that improves picture resolution and color when it doesn't. That is based on the quality/bitrate of the media and the color gamut of your actual fucking screen. It's why you can pop a 4k HDR movie and turn it off and it looks sepia tone and then pop in the Blu-ray and suddenly it's colorful. Its post processing bullshit and the majority of screens cannot display properly unless you have an OLED. And even then it cannot be just any OLED, but one that can output enough brightness to take advantage of HDR, HLG, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, etc. and even worse than that only some manufacturers support HDR10+ and some only support Dolby Vision.

How? I play games with my monitor at almost 0 brightness because I like my eyes and HDR memes come from the brightness as far as I understand. I could burn my eyes out with the monitor I already have if I wanted to see more details but I'm quite fine.
>>
>>736465252
I hate shittily implemented HDR in games, they always seem to mess with my monitor in a way that makes the buttons unresponsive, Destiny 2 for example.
>>
>>736465252
>HDR makes no sense.
Exactly. SDR was designed to work on a range of TVs and at any room brightness. HDR is the complete opposite requires a pitch black room and an OLED TV with per pixel brightness and the paper white to be correctly set per game and it's just a fucking shitshow. They should've just made 10-bit SDR.
>>
>>736467779
Using HDR doesn't mean you're blasting light canons at your face, it just means the differences between lighter and darker parts of your screen are more noticeable
>>
>>736465252
I dont give a fuck what the artists wanted. Most of rhem are retarded and have no taste anyways. I dont have an hdr monitor but I WILL pull up the nvidia digital vibrance slider to whatevee I like to make the colors more colorful. I set it to 65 fpr skyrim and it looks bettee than any color changing mod. I dont have crimson desert but the colors look quite good by default in that game i think

If you do get it, install the renodx mod to improve them. Some parts aren't fixable too, the devs did this really weird geography thing where the sun is down for a long stretch of the day and some of the green valleys end up looking pretty bad under those lighting conditions. Renodx helps those areas somewhat with the grass fix but it's still kinda ugly.
Then I use some reshade shader to make the sky more blue since it's got a gray tinge to it. Overall I agree with you though, it's been a while since I haven't had much trouble fixing up the colors of a new game I've played. Rise of Ronin and DD2 was a nightmare for me.

Most games copy the settings from the Windows HDR calibration tool. If it looks like shit either use RTX HDR or just Win Alt B that shit and turn it off. Who cares.

I don't even fuck with HDR. Most games look great and I find HDR just ruins the colors I'm used to.
>>
Fuck this shit, I'm going back to SDR
>>
>>736470952
I can see this image just fine with my SDR-only monitor though?
>>
>>736465252
I do this >>736465856
I usually use Either lilliums HDR and set the tonemapping myself.
Or renodx if it's available and fine tune it again.
Whichever gives me the better visuals of what I want.
I start with renoxdx because I can usually seperately adjust the UI brightness. But if the overall image quality is meh to me, I will do the lillium path instead which typically gives me better more stable results but UI is too bright.
>but what should it look like
you can look at SDR version, then just imagine brighter highlights, blacks being actually black and better colors with no banding.
that is about right.
>>
>>736467779
real life is far more bright than your monitor.

What's with this obsession some people have with ground-truth accuracy? The point of HDR is shit looks better, the picture is deeper, shadows more detailed, highlights are more detailed, because you have a higher range of luminance to work with. Throughout history since the dawn of video games people have played on wildly different hardware, monitors, and TVs to varying effects. People also have different eyes, different viewing conditions. Your mood and physiology can even effect how media looks. You're still getting the same sprites, the same models, the same animations and environments and textures, you're getting the intended experience, that's what matters. It doesn't matter whether some pixel x,y at some exact point in time z is the exact shade of magenta that one of the visual designers at some point maybe possibly intended deliberately and possibly several other devs disagreed with. Stop obsessing over this fools errand and just enjoy the nicer visuals.

This is why games and digital "art' will never be art.
With real art paintings on real canvases from the renaissance, you knew exactly what the art was supposed to look like because it was right there in front of you.
>>
>>736473896
no.
colors fade with time.
Different people have different perception of color, the artist might have a different vision to what you have and so on.
>>
To me "when it's properly set up it looks better" is already worth it.
Honestly in the case of Cyberpunk it's weird. The game has a RenoDX mod, but I prefer it without. That mod hasn't been updated in a while if I'm not mistaken, that might be the reason.
As for some "brighter" games it isn't amazing or groundbreaking but I see it as an improvement still over SDR. Some games like Stellar Blade I will -not- play without HDR. I don't think you understand how good that fucking game looks on it. You don't know. You just don't.
HDR is however fucked as a "standard". There isn't a standard, it's a bit of a mess. But that doesn't mean it's unusable or not worth it. It's just that it's like you have to fiddle with your TV settings a little more instead of just leaving it there. Some developers do whatever the fuck they please. Microsoft doesn't handle HDR well. And monitors could be better (aggressive ABL above 400 or 500 nits), I feel that HDR is much better on TVs right now.
SDR is what's targeted mostly because not a lot of people have actually capable displays (IPS monitors are being marketed as HDR capable even though they're not) and older content never really took into account a higher dynamic range so it's all fake shit.

>>736471187

It's not possible to show the real effect of HDR on an SDR monitor. So they make fake screenshots, where they remove the saturation from the image and call it SDR, and then boost the saturation from the image and call it HDR. The image itself doesn't have HDR color, so it can't truly show you HDR color. And your monitor doesn't have HDR color, so you can't see HDR color.

The only way to really compare HDR to standard, is to witness an HDR monitor in real life.
>>
>>736475145
better way to explain it is:
How do you show 1000 nits vs 100 nits, on a 100nit monitor.
As an example.
>>
>>736467779
>>736467898
HDR is both about higher britness ranges. And also, about a wider color bit depth. Standard monitors only display an 8bit color depth. That's 2 to the 8th power. Or 256. For 3 different channels: red green and blue. So 256x256x256 = 16,777,216 colors.

While HDR are capable of 10bit depth. 2 to the 10th power is 1,024. 1,024x1,024x1,024 = 1,073,741,824

16 million colors, versus 1 billion colors. This makes it so that you get more detail from images. Especially in super dark images. Since there is so much more color to work with, the dark regions benefit a lot.

Sounds like you dont know what you are doing. I have a c5 42 as my daily. Hdr and sdr looks the same for non hdr content and for hdr content all bright things become brighter and the image is more dynamic looking and overall more vibrant, so sounds like ur a retard. Also use energy media player for dv content.
>>
>>736465856
Bottom looks like you just cranked vibrance and saturation to max removing all possible shades so each color is just 1
Just install the lut fix for black levels
>>
>>736468124
Actual retard here thinks hdr means every game and movie will be 10000 nits fullscreen 24/7
Actual zoomer brainlet
