Elden Ring was the first truly mainstream iteration of this game design idea which leaves me to wonder; why did it take nearly three decades to catch on?

The format is just very different. >>736467476FromSoft was a bargain bin filler developer with one good franchise before Demon's Souls (Armored Core), and Mecha games were just as obscure back then as they are today. DeS and the Souls series were making a name for themselves, one bit at a time. But DS3 already had decent sales, over 10 mil. Elden Ring just exploded because it was cashing in on a decade of hype with a new world so newbies felt welcomed + GRRM's branding.
