>>736469715It's honestly a bit weird that VIII seems to be more popular in recent years than IX. It may very well be simply because there is no remaster version of IX on Steam, even though Moguri Mod is the better than any paid remaster of all the other FF games.

I think a lot of it has to do with 7 and 8 building expectations toward the grittier more realistic leaning designs and settings as well as releasing at the very tail end of the ps1 with FF10 coming out a year later. In the west, I recall a lot of people just instantly checking out because of the semi chibi designs.

>>736469996Everything about FF9 felt like it was designed to waste a player’s time, it really felt like the beginning of Square's slow end…Without modifications it’s very slow to the point of making ATB worse because the bars fill up during slow animations anyways. Equipment system is worse version of Espers, Tetra Master is worse than Triple Triad, Trance is the worst version of Limit Breaks, you get no control of your party until 2/3 into the game where it still doesn't give you that much control. Party members get underleveled because of how much they get taken away. Hyped up alleged remake that never happened. FF9 is a cursed game that was too ambitious for its debut console.
