>>736516114There are a few factors.First of all, the enemy AI is coded to almost always attack a horse first before the rider. Consider the fact that when your horse gets killed, that's means your horse was effectively an extremely huge amount of bonus hitpoints for your other characters (putting aside AoE attacks). Also since enemies have a very high preference to target pets with melee and ranged attacks, that means you can mostly ignore armor class on any character that uses mounted combat and just make the pet have high AC. Another factor is that pets can take teamwork feats if you raise their int to 3 or put a headband of int on them, and a few of the teamwork feats are very strong. Particularly Outflank is EXTREMELY strong, especially late game with combat reflexes and improved critical you will will get massive amounts of free attacks if you put outflank on your whole party. Shake it Off is also really good. Aside from teamwork feats and being a massive meat shield, they also allow their riders to do a full attack when they're at a distance from the enemy for melee characters. Normally you have to move and then attack that can really cripple your damage output. The final point is that a few pets have automatic trip abilities, particularly wolves and dogs will trip enemies surprisingly often since every single bit they do is a trip proc, especially if you give them trip focused feats. Dogs and Wolves also grow larger and can be riden at like level 7. And on top of all that, they actually do pretty high damage on their own. And you're getting all of this pretty much for "free" from just one class ability.
