And me being the autist I am actually thought about it pretty hard.
You know the Borderlands DLCs where you're "playing" DnD and it's just being acted out in normal gameplay? I think that. You're playing the usual Komi Gang going through a DnD campaign but your characters look like the anime characters and act like them, calling attention to the DnD logic.
And just make it a turn based rpg.

A truly perfect forever MMO with a massive scale and fun combat
Something with so much scale and content that you could actively play it hardcore for the next 5 years and still not be done, and even the sweatiest no-lifers could play for a year straight and not finish solving and theory crafting everything and it simply must be played and enjoyed

Something with the impact original WoW had when it first came out, but with even more scale and content that everyone can escape into and just play
>>
>>736474534
I know this might sound like "current thing" post, with the recent pearl abyss game release, but
I've always thought Black Desert could be the best MMORPG in the history, the game lets you play however long you want, has a billion things to take part in, is very immersive, has a ton of unique and fun classes, BUT it doesn't have any group content so you actually play with other people. So every time I've picked it up, I've dropped it after less than 50 hours.
I would like to play a version of Black Desert which would be focused on the MMO part. Dungeons, raids and shit.
i'm not interested in crimson desert for the exact same reason and more

>space adventure, big ol' universe that you explore like in Star Control 2 with a big story focus
>instead of Star Control 2 combat you launch smaller fighters and then control one in 1st person like in Wing Commander
>when boarding enemy ships, or fighting on the ground, you control your units in turn based mode like X-COM
It's the ultimate game. I've dreamed of it for many, many years.
>>
>Chronicles of Elyria, fully developed as originally proposed
For those unaware, this was a crowdfunded MMO project aiming to do something unique. Its basically a medieval, player driven economy/governance, skill-learning-by-doing (no classes) progression, and more. There would be aging and permadeath, a genetic system with children getting benefits/detriments from their parents as well as aesthetic + taking over the assets of their predecessor characters in dynasties, player governance in a feudal-esq system from being a Mayor of a small hamlet all the way up to a King, varied cultures and racial groups, and a whole fuckload of other things. Player characters would become NPCs when you logged off an you could give them instructions in the meantime so you could make some progress even offline, while also not being assassinated while you sleep 'counting" the same as if you were online etc. You could play as a wandering adventurer, gatherer/crafter, all the way up to varying levels of village-to-kingdom management - there was also a caste system of sorts where regardless of other shit you were doing, the way laws applied to you would depend on your rank/caste so if you were in the Nobility or Aristocracy for instance you may have higher taxes on your inter-kingdom trades and be expected to raise levies for the Kingdom you served, but you could legally hunt the deer in the forest and process their really high quality leather and bone, provided you donated half the meat to the kingdom's stores; if a peasant tried to do the same thing, they'd get punished harshly if there was a law that all the deer belong to the King who gives his bannermen the right to harvest them.

The website is still up, but even using UE it was basically an attempt at a fantasy medieval Star Citizen of sorts, but only raised a fraction of what SC did , made some bad choices and is now on some sort of semi-permanent hiatus; there WAS a pre-alpha historic slice for awhile though

>More fun on paper
I don't think this is necessarily true. The problem is that you need to be able to deliver on the depth, immersion, fidelity etc.. if you're going to go that path. I think they literally saw Star Citizen get record funding with an ambitious project and figured that they'd have the same sort of support... which would not the the case. There were quite a few other MMOs, many not nearly as ambitious, that ended up falling off a cliff in the mid 2010s or definitely by the COVID19 Pandemic striking the killing blow, because they didn't have the features behind them to show they were making progress towards building the thing.

There are many people who would want a game with those features if it just dropped into their lap and had an adept team managing it, so even if not every player wanted to manage a town somewhere or plot trade routes for their settlement and commission a public works project, creating contracts/orders etc to build a road between it and the next town over that was building a quarry,...there was some autist that would think the road planning would be great and the players could just go out there and get paid for crafting and selling ox carts to the people going to build the road etc.

Game where you play as a self appointed hall monitor of /v/
You have to use various tactics to get rid of threads about things you don't like such as spamming false reports, spamming/derailing/shitposting threads into being vacated, etc. You lose points for every second a thread about things you don't like is active, or if mods ban you for being a hall monitor (rarely happens) or other things happen
You do not get paid for this.

>>
>>736475451
Black Desert also had really shitty monetization, like a lot of K-MMOs last I checked; lots of grind and obtuse shit, but lacking the collaboration stuff you mentioned. I remember seeing their "founder packages" and there was some shady shit going on there for what you got vs what you paid. Ironically, something like Where Winds Meet is thousands of time worse today with gacha bullshit so. I also remember being put off by what at the time was a bunch of gender-locked "characters, not really classes"; some other Korean games like Vindictus I think did this as well. Looking at the site now it seems they've really increased the classes and have both male and female versions of most roles with slightly different names.

What kinds of MMOs / what is important to you in the mechanics or other features of it? The other anon above wanted group content for instance. Depending what you like and what settings, mechanics etc..there are some options.

>>736476443
I think everyone likes the idea of being a king or mayor, but in this setting it seemed that the job of playing that way properly was closer to a grand strategy and diplomacy-with-real-people sort of game, had high stakes and big potential downsides...compared to being an educated member of the gentry who goes out to become a great duelist, bounty hunter, or a sorcerer discovering/creating new spells; its not like everyone else needs to be a peasant digging ditches etc People like the idea of all that other stuff but how the game described it (and still does on their site) it does't seem like its something everyone wants to do if you come online to find out the mayor or lord of the settlement two zones away doesn't think you sent the stones you promised for your part of the roadway, and now you have to investigate what happened and placate them so they don't go bitch to the Count who rules both your settlements etc.

An MMORPG that actually includes the RPG part with a dash of Dynasty Warriors/Mount & Blade/Total War mixed in
>tfw you'll never spend hours looking for a group of rogues who are competent enough to sneak ahead of the raid party and sabotage some important shit to make the raid smoother
>tfw you'll never farm rep with relevant factions so your raid starts with more of their NPC units that you can throw at the enemy
>tfw you'll never have to physically protect your mages because some of the intelligent enemy types don't follow aggro mechanics and instead have their own tactics and target priority
>tfw you'll never have your bard finish a bard-exclusive questline to gain rep with one of the dungeon's mini-bosses, turning them to your side at a scripted moment in the raid
>tfw you'll never get a raid that's with people dying left and right while you claw your way inch by inch towards the big bad, and instead you only get a "pull -> picnic break to recover -> repeat" simulator

A good MMO in 2026 that redefines the genre. I'm one of those hopeless ghouls that only plays this dead, tired genre.
There's somehow always a dozen new MMOs on the horizon, but they're all shit if they ever do come out.

>"Collect 10 boar asses."
>"Kill 15 Goblin Saboteurs."
It's the same fuckin shit as 20 years ago, just in a shiny new package.

If the Riot MMO ever gets out of development hell, I think that might be my only hope for the genre. It's the only MMO made by a developer that produces consistent hits, has massive talent behind it, a pre-existing world to build off of, and infinite funding. I haven't even played any of their games and I still appreciate how good it could be.

It seemed like like commoners and the middle class (gentry? Maybe something else) could still do very well just doing normal medieval low fantasy MMO stuff. Being a bandit or outlaw would have a lot of risk. I remember one king (I think there were maybe intended to have 6 kingdoms, each kingdom had 12 duchies, each duchies had like 32 counties, and each county could have hundreds of cities/towns and other settlements. ) basically planned on the forums to run the whole thing like a democracy and set up a legislature and see how that worked out. Would have been interesting to see. A kingdom without laws would probablyy be a pretty shitty place just like one that's ruled by a tyrant would also be, but it seemed like they were trying to balance all the stuff, but your role in it would be relatively small if you were not a King , Duke, or even a Count.

In any event it would be way, way too intricate to get going in terms of finances and would also depend upon a relative concentration of player base so I get why it failed so early, no matter the cool ideas and decent hypothetical implementations, you still have to make the thing the right way and make it fun on a day to day basis for the average player. As I recall, when I was giving them suggestions years ago I told them that specific thing that they needed to focus on the average player's experience first an then go up - but unfortunately it seemed like they listened to too many of the whales and wanted to build all the kingdom management shit first; things that only a handful of (very loud, who had paid like $5K+ for a Duchy and twice that to start as a King at launch if memory serves) people would even get a chance to use. It was particularly annoying because they were planning the alpha to start back in time vs the launch era so they could basically start from just families in huts pretty much and make the gameplay solid then add the larger scale, but apparently not

Imagine a game with a world bigger than no other, with practically infinite content, where you can play any way you want.
The draw of an MMO is very appealing, it's just they all fuck up something or other. So you could imagine how a dream game would be an MMO without any of those flaws.

>WoW: 20 years old, abysmal writing, 95% of the world is dead/pointless
>GW2: the "horizontal progression" meme means that most content felt pointless
>FFXIV: sluggish gameplay
>OSRS: the graphics + tile-based movement + tick-based combat are all very hit-or-miss for some people
>every Korean MMO: Grinds far too long, P2W out the ass
Also practically every popular MMO out there is 10-25 years old. Most of them with the same "copy WoW but maybe add a twist" mindset.
>>
>>736477329
OSRS isn't an mmo. You do next to nothing with other players besides trading. Stuff like MH is more of an MMO.

Would probably work on my own if I had more free time in my life, but I fear I would end up "forcing it" and it wouldn't have half the charm/personality the original games did.
>>
>>736476987
The first 4 were things that happened in EverQuest back in the day.
>Rogues were given objectives by the raid leader that would mean just disarming traps or opening a door somewhere, independent of any combat.
>Rep/faction system meant you could get half the enemies in one part of the raid to be friendly if you curried favor with the dragons or the giants, and would fight the other side.
>Enemies without typical threat tables and some that target certain classes or enemies that observe a player casting a given spell
>exclusive questline that lets a formerly hostile enemy come over to your side or give you a special bonus.
The last bit about pulling is just a mechanics of the turn based engagement with RPG conventions thing that, if you had real time combat you could maybe get a bit closer.

If you don't mind the lack of dynasty warriors/mount-and-blade action combat keep your eyes for
>Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen

Seems to fit the criteria.

Semantics aside there's raids and several multiplayer bosses now, and they've gone out of their way to give most skills a multiplayer friendly way of levelling them (the even worked Woodcutting, so that sharing trees is no longer griefing but instead beneficial). It's definitely an MMO even if it can be mostly soloed, but the same could be said for WoW or something, I played HC and barely interacted with others on my way to 60.

S4 League 2 but first person and obviously with the P2W bullshit removed.
I don't get why we're still getting hero shooters when loadout shooters are so vastly superior.
Even monetization wise(P2W garbage aside) S4 League had massive potential because instead of just wearing one skin at a time, you would mix and match different clothes for different parts(separate pants/shirt/hat etc).
The industry really needs to get in on this.

Well, a perfect MMO also would not be datamined and "solved" before it even releases. It's a dream concept, I know, but that's what the thread is for.
Also, I imagine WoW got dropped because the current year player is not able to focus their attention and keep playing one game. They'll play whatever is "hyped up" right now, and the moment streamers stop playing it, they will do the same. The downfall on MMOs shouldn't be blamed on the developers and enshittification of games themselves, people have changed too.

Original Planetside is a thing of beauty for its era. Planetside 2 is s pale shadow and fucked up the monetization. /v/ should play one of those original PS1 emulated servers. I'd love to get a proper Planetside successor that had all of PS1's features and more with
>Subscription for full access.
>F2P capped both in BR and CR but accessible
>Cosmetics unlocked by playing the game
For those who don't know, that's how original PS worked. Battle Rank gave points towards certs. There were no classes, but you needed to buy certs in order to equip all gear except very basic light armor and generic weapons, use specialty (hacking, engineering, medical) gear, and to pilot (but not ride in) all vehicles. So someone at max level could be more versatile, but they died just as easily to a newbie using the same gear. Command Rank was special Xp from leading squads or platoons that gave increasing battle overview abilities (view all friendlies in a large area, later view all enemies), officer chat (eventually, ability to broadcast to everyone on your side on a given continent), bombardment (artillery bombardment, later SPACE LASER) and some cosmetics. It made for a wild system - it had its problems being limited by the tech of the era but its too bad the sequel fucked up too much with class loadouts and bordering on P2W weapon variations plus cosmetics

I don't think the datamining or 'solving' is necessarily and issue for most players. Even in the early days we had
>Allakhazam and Thottbot
and other databases of people discovering quests and the like. Some in games like EverQuest were REALLY in depth - there was no quest journal or anything. People didn't get bored because oh no someone figured out a good way to kill a raid boss or whatever, just knowing stuff is different than doing it. Even early WoW had plenty of players who kept playing long after the world first types showed up

The problem is a playerbase made of those who do everything as a performative shitshow instead of a virtual world. Streaming everything while talking to your guild on Discord and other shit to get you away from the game and then complain that it has 'no community' and blame it on dungeon finders and other shit like that. People are to blame for a part of the enshittifcation wjhen it comes to interactions; now monetization - that's all on the developer/publisher greed.

I would like you to have a 3D action game, let's say... The user can play as forest elves, palace guards, or a villain. And if the user is playing as elves, then the elves are in the forest and the wooden houses are being attacked by the soldiers of the palace and the villains. You can rob corovans... And if the elves are in the forest, then make it so that there the forest is dense... And the game engine can be set up so that the trees in the distance are rendered as sprites, when you approach closer, they are transformed into 3-dimensional trees. You can purchase things like in Daggerfall. And the enemies are 3D too, and the corpses are also 3D. You can jump, etc. If you play as the palace guards, then you have to obey the commander, and protect the palace from the villian (I hasn't come up with the name yet) and spies, elf guerillas, and raids on some of these (elves, evil ...). Well, if for the evil one ... it means that spies or partisans of the elves sometimes attack, the user can do whatever he wants, order his troops with him to defend the palace and go on the attack. There are 4 zones in the game. That is, the map has 4 zones, the 1st is the zone of peasants (neutral), the 2nd is the zone of the emperor (where the palace is), the 3rd is the zone of the elves, the 4th is the zone of the villian... (in the mountains, there is an old fort...)

Also, in the game they can not only kill but also chop off a limb and if the user is not healed in time, he will die, as well as gouge out an eye, but the user may not die but simply not see the floor of the screen, or get or buy a prosthesis if it's his leg, he dies or will crawl or ride a wheelchair, or the best... to use a prosthesis. He can be saved…

P.S. I've been wanting this game for two years.

>make everything in the overworld soloable
>punish players for grouping up in the overworld by lowering exp gains, not sharing quest progression, and making resources scarce enough that you don't want others nearby
>introduce dungeon finders
>surprised nobody socializes or engages with the community outside of their guild
yeah the people change but a large part of change is a result of the environment and the environment is mostly dictated by those in charge of the games
>>
>>736474582
Let's link up bro I have only ideas
>>
>>736479557
>make everything in the overworld soloable
That is fine, there is nothing fucking worse than sitting on your ass waiting for group to fill/form because you literally can't progress without one but also can't do anything else in the meantime either
>punish players for grouping up in the overworld by lowering exp gains, not sharing quest progression, and making resources scarce enough that you don't want others nearby
Shit design, fair.
>introduce dungeon finders
Nothing really wrong with them if you already have a game chokefull of instances, sure fucking beats screaming lfg in general/city/zone for a hour
>>
>>736479557
>overworld solo
This is not an issue and is one of the reasons WoW as a runaway success vs earlier games. There were some elite enemies that could in theory be soloed if you had gear, but it was easier to group up with others in the area too. Being able to accomplish some stuff solo was a big QoL change back in the day.
>punish grouping up in overworld
This is a problem. WoW and many others figured out solutions to this an later with proximity based 'public quests' and other stuff made it so that grouping or simply working with others on something more difficult should be beneficial, not punished.
>dungeon finders
I don't have a problem with these at all. Tools to find groups or content only negate low-content interactions. You're not socializing if you're just shouting "LF2M for Castle Derp" in a populated area or if when you're in the dungeon the only thing you do is "Kill skull, then X, trap square, sheep moon" and stay silent the rest of the time. Letting people find others who want to do the thing they want to do, especially if it requires 5-25+ is a good thing. The problem comes from those who don't want to interact outside of bare minimum tactical interactions.

I don't think its really just the environment in terms of those technical things - I think its that a lot of the players who came from later generations looked at the game differently. They didn't WANT to go outside their Discord etc. Oldfags who were in it for the Virtual World stuff in addition to accomplishing whatever event, were different. You can tell this on a lot of roleplay servers where players will go out of their way to make their own fun and interact with others, be it in dungeons or extensive walk-up stuff in cities. While I agree stuff that makes you feel like others are impediments to your success makes it worse, but QoL benefits like group finders or having content that's solo friendly didn't ruin interactions; people with nothing except required onesdid

I wish games weren't afraid to have their setting in Africa, and portray a complete shit hole. Like what if the game is just an open world gang war set in Liberia. With generals who believe eating the hearts of kids will give them superpowers. IRL they would give themselves crazy names like General Mosquito and General Mosquito-Spray. And I love nothing more than opening up a map in a game and seeing streets painted in different colors showing where you can take over.

It would play something like Crimson Desert, but with 10x more stuff to discover and whole solar systems to explore.
You get stronger from cultivation items, you can be a monster while being a human at the same time, you can have armies of a race, hire mercenaries more powerful than you, etc.

A MMORPG with vibes similar to the golden era of Ragnarok Online. The game itself would differ from Ragnarok in some areas though, for example, remove any and all PvP modes to focus exclusively on making new high quality PvE content. It would have the freedom and variety of Ragnarok builds, but with the balance and challenge of FF XIV and WoW raids.

Player could be merchants and sell their things and there would be no automated system to automatically find items through a search bar. The game would have no wiki or Discord or anything of the like with gay ass walkthroughs and guides, and people would share information in-game.

There would be a large amount of interesting quests with choices that influenced the outcome of the stories. The game would have means to keep every piece of content relevant and balanced.

I know that it's unrealistic but we're talking dream game that doesn't exist, right.

A game with an elemental magic system where every element interacts not only with each other but also the environment, like, you can shock water or metal to electrify it, or you can make steam explosions, burn forests, cause a huge plasma explosion by mixing fire and lightning etc etc, some games kind of do this, but id like to see one go really far in depth with it and make comboing various elemental spells together the gameplay. Like you're switching between all different kinds of elements to figure out how everything works together, and the way elements react is based on what forms they're both in, like a stream of fire magic and a stream of water magic should combine and make you shoot boiling hot steam at stuff, or ice and lightning cause the ice to explode and shatter all around, leaving electrified chunks of ice that can trip enemies up and shock em too. Stuff like that.

I had a fun idea of a character based action game (DMC/Bayo) style game where you slot elemental magic into runes to get different effects, rather than weapons.

Like you can slot Fire into a “claw rune” for quick fast melee swipes, or the “arrow rune” for a flame thrower. While Water in “claw” is a whip or in “arrow” for waves that push enemies back.

Then halfway through you get the ability to mix elementals into single runes, so you can mix ground and fire for lava, or water and lighting for extra damage/debuffs.

That game /v/ was conceptualizing in a thread about 6 years ago.
>takes place in a abandoned mall on the moon
>you crash land there and have to survive
>no percieved threats at first
>basically just comfy base building, resource management, and maintenance in an eerie locale
>as time goes on weird shit starts to happen. Weird noises, power outages, stuff being moved around when you're not looking.
>automated announcments over intercom go from being mundane advertisements and notifications of time/mall status to creepy weird shit or just breathing.

If any other anons remember or have screenshots please share. Those were some cool threads

>He must get back to his chapter
>But he doesnt know his way around the planet theyre on, but he does know how to fight
>She needs to get off world since the Xenos hoards slaughtered her village and already killed her family, she has the knowledge to navigate the planet on foot but cant fight on thier own
>Theres an Imperial space port holding out on the other side of the planet
>They team up, he teaches her how to fight, He sort of becomes a grumpy father figure in the process
>They both survive
>As Thanks, the Chapter of Marines put a good word in to the Sisters Of Battle

BLAME inspired third-person explorer with sudden and decisive combat. You can customize yourself but also a partner android or gynoid. They start with a randomly chosen personality, class, and stats. You can acquire or learn to assemble a device that changes their stats, class, and even personality. You can equip your gynoid waifu or husbantron with any armor or weapon but their class and stats will favor certain weapon types. There's a campaign mode with Nine Layers going down for the terminal that will allow people to use teleporters across the urban megastructure. On the second layer you can choose to play with one other player and their android companion.

You play as a blind Samurai character using that Daredevil-ish sound based "vision", the gameplay would use one of those dumb waggle remotes and you need to swing for attacks, parries, blocks, ect.
Something that invokes that classical movie feel, "Legend of the Blind Samurai" old japanese flick type shenanigans, maybe a sequel with different time period so it doesn't get stale.

Post apocalyptic game where you're a robot commanding an army of synthetic goblin-like creatures against the remnants of humanity who have mutated into Cronenberg flesh abominations.

You have to build up a base RTS style, and then build power and manufacturing infrastructure to supply your turrets and soldiers with food and ammo sort of like a factory game. This lets you secure the area and thin out the hordes of monsters enough that exploring becomes possible, at which point the game becomes akin to a Metroidvania with Devil May Cry hack-and-slash combat. You'd need to set up smaller outposts around the map to hold chokepoints or secure resources, manage supply lines, and set traps so that the number of mutants remains manageable and you don't get overwhelmed while exploring.

So... Mad Max's They Are Billions of Satisfactory Symphonies of the Overlord's Brutal Legend Nights.

A true 3D metroidvania
I.e. no stamina bar bullshit, precise and fast character controls that plays more like an action platformer than a typical rollslog soulslike, a semi open world with proper branching paths, meaningful progression upgrades and abilities.

I honestly cannot think of a true 3d Metroidvania in existence that doesn't suffer from being too influenced by soulslikes

A game where you play as a Nazi soldier who is Hitler's top goy. The game starts with you in the frontlines of the war but after insane singlehanded victories you rise through the ranks until you're personally shutting down conspiracies against the fuehrer. I have a level in mind where the Jews take control of Auschwitz and you go in to exterminate them. The game ends in Hitler's bunker where he gets you to kill him and then you get taken by the soviets and tried for all of Hitler's crimes.
I'm not a Nazi personally, I just think it'd be fun and transgressive.

Even then the people with interesting items would upload them online and it would get spread around in hours. What I want is something that would capture that early internet era videogames feel where there were still lots of rumors and urban legends.
We are just so connected nowadays that the world has gotten much smaller in a way. There's very little room left for wondering about what could be out there, even on videogames.

>>
>>736534934
>Even then the people with interesting items would upload them online and it would get spread around in hours
There are plenty ways to circumvent this. Change what drops the item each time it's dropped, encourage secrecy and selling information by making the item limited or allowing it to be taken through various means that could be learned at the source, etc.
There are many ways MMOs could go about to bring back the myths and intrigue. It just wont' happen because MMOs these days are all theme parks where everybody's allowed to get everything and hurt feelings aren't allowed
